Is this possible?

Is it possible to run Subsonic through a website or server hosted by a company like Dreamhost, godaddy, etc... ? Ive got a static IP just not sure I would go about setting port forwarding or opening a port.

It depends if they'll let you. There's the whole legal issue of hosting your music.

If you have proper ssh access and not that crappy Cpanel thing that a lot of web hosts provide then you can install it easily.

You would have to speak to the web host about ports. They may already be open.

You can run subsonic either on a VPS, or on a shared hosting with Tomcat instance running. It's always best to use VPS since Subsonic may use considerable amount of RAM when you have quite a few listeners.

You could possibly install Subsonic on a DreamHost PS. However, I'm not sure how their copyright policy would contend with it.

However I know you can't run Subsonic on a DreamHost shared web hosting account, because they do not allow persistent processes.

Cheers,
