Subsonic web interface fails to load in Safari on Mac 10.6.4

The subject line describes the basic problem: the sidebars and the top and bottom bar load, mostly, but the middle frame doesn't. Instead, I get an eternal spinner. Safari's Activity Monitor indicates that (at least part of) what is failing to load are the gif images:

http://localhost:4040/icons/status.png
http://localhost:4040/icons/up.gif
and the page
http://localhost:4040/gettingStarted.view
which changes to e.g. settings.view when I click a link and still fails to load.

Advice?
