android app song skips when "streaming"

I'm using subsonic 4.0.1 and android app 1.7
Every time I play a song, if the song wasn't fully downloaded before it started playing, it will skip a few times. That's been true in every scenario I've seen so far.

Play a single song - It starts downloading right away. It might finish downloading in 5 seconds, but it may skip anywhere in the song even after the download has finished.

Queue up several songs - First song starts downloading right away. Same results as playing a single song. If the second song has been fully downloaded before it starts, it won't stutter even if the app is still downloading other songs. If the second song has not been fully downloaded before it starts, it will stutter.

Play an already downloaded song - never skips.

Does anybody else experience this with the android app?
