Subsonic Forum

Hi,

I've been trying for days to get Subsonic to work. I've manually forwarded a manually assigned (not 80) port. In the Networking Setting tab, when I click on save, I get two messages. The first is:

"Status: Successfully forwarding port XXXX"

This seems like a good sign. However, further down the page, I get the following message:

"Status: XXXXX.subsonic.org is registered, but could not connect to it. (ConnectTimeoutException)"

Running Windows 7 x64. A virtually brand-new clean install (reinstalled the OS 48 hours ago).

Any help would be very much appreciated. I have searched this forum for the ConnectTimeoutException error and could not find anything helpful.

I'm having the same problem. (And yes, I donated...was working fine on an old router, can't get it to work since my landlord switched over)

Running Win7 x64, forwarding a port (not 80). Any help would be much appreciated.

I am getting the exact same error as mentioned above. Can someone please help us.

Uninstalling and moving on....

Go to this site http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ and make sure that it says that your subsonic ports are being forwarded correctly by upnp. Report back and we can work from there.

Ok. I tested the connection on the site that you mentioned above. It says port 4040 is open.

My problem is this: Subsonic works fine internally, but If I go outside of my LAN then subsonic does not connect and FAILS.

--> myIP:4040 at home works great
--> myIP:4040 at work fails.

I know port forwarding is set up correctly, b/c I use utorrent for port forwarding and can access that app fine at work.

I donated, and would at least expect this to go a little smoother. Great app, bad implementation.

I have also followed the above link. Looks like that is the ultimate problem. But what does he mean by your subsonic IP address.

My router's ip is 192.168.1.1 and It forwards to subsonic 192.168.1.100 <-- Is the later that what he means. If so, I have change the host file to point to that and that does not work.

I finally figured it out. Here is what I did wrong; hopefully this helps someone else.

When first installing subsonic I had a problem with port forwarding, so I manually forwarded the ports on my router. However, I failed to uncheck the "Automatically configure your router to allow incoming connections to Subsonic (using UPnP or NAT-PMP port forwarding).". Once that was unchecked, everything seems to work both within the LAN and without. Thank God! Finally.

Yeah this was helpful to me. Man is this a pain in the ass! Been working at this for an hour and I am still not getting music on my phone but I think I am close now. Anyway to add to what you said. In order to uncheck automatic you have to uncheck and then save and the save button is hid! You have to scroll down a little bit to see it! That crap drives me nuts. So I finally am logged in on my iPhone via 3g and I can see my files but no tunes yet. At least I got that far. I almost gave up already.

There is no doubt that setting up Subsonic isn't the easiest project you'll undertake, but once you succeed, I think you'll agree it's worth the effort. Considering all the different platforms and Network gear that this is being installed on, it's no wonder that it takes a bit of research to get it right.

Here are the guidelines I've been working on to help others. Please feel free to comment and/or add/edit or make any suggestions that you think would help others.

Never use port 80 - ISP's often use it or block it. 8080,8081, work fine.

In Subsonic Settings/Network - UNCHECK " Automatically configure your router to allow incoming connections to Subsonic (using UPnP or NAT-PMP port forwarding)." make sure to hit the SAVE button, you may have to scroll down to see it depending on your screen size.

Manually assign a fixed intenal IP and static route to your server at the upper end of the address range of the router, out of the way of DHCP, e.g. 192.168.1.254

Set up your router manually. uPNP might work, but most often it doesn't. Learing how to do it will be a skill you'll love having as your network grows.

Check the Subsonic Control Panel to make sure it's using the right port you're going to use. I typically use 8080, 8081, etc.

Set up port forwarding in your router to direct traffic on the selected port to your server.

Learn your external IP address assigned by your ISP.

Test your setup by entering your external IP:port# to see if it connects. e.g.

http://24.88.76.61:4040/

If it works, you're good to go.
