I've seen variations of this elsewhere in the forums, but no answers, so I'm going to possibly annoy folks by asking again: why can't I get the service to start in the first place?
Running WinXP SP3, no firewall installed. The subsonic icon always has a red x on it, even though the Subsonic Control Panel says its running. I cannot connect to localhost or 127.0.0.1, even if I put in the port number (windows default of 80 or 8080).
Is this a windows issue? I can't find anything else using port 80. If I just randomly pick another port number, the same thing happens. I'm not sure if there are "free" port numbers that are best to check with or not.
Any help wold be greatly appreciated.

@jakobedlam - Windows XP has a built in firewall. Have you made sure that it is set to allow Subsonic (java.exe) through.

Windows firewall is off. After reading this I tried turning it on, and excepting the java.exe, but no change.
I'll work on your guide for standalone.

okay, so followed all the steps in your (excellent) guide. I thought I should uninstall the other version before doing this. Now this leaves me with the questions of:
a. should I have done that? and
b. How do I access the subsonic interface once the server is running?

You don't have to uninstall the old version of Subsonic but it is a good idea because you may cause a conflict if they both try to use the same port.

You should be able to access Subsonic on the machine that you're running Subsonic on via

http://localhost:4040

in your web browser where 4040 is the port you set to use in "subsonic.bat". Remember if you close the "debugging window" Subsonic will stop. Also remember that Subsonic will not start instantly. As it says in the wiki you should look for a message saying something like...

Subsonic running on http://localhost:4040/

When you first start subsonic you will need to login with user 'admin' which has the password 'admin'.

delcypher, it all worked just fine. Finally got to the interface to start using Subsonic (changed it to port 80, since everything Windows has instructed me to select this).
Now I've just got the same problems everyone else seems to have: I can't reach it remotely. Locally good. Remotely bad. I'll keep plugging away.

As for your remote access problem:
- If you are having problems accessing Subsonic on a different computer on your local network (e.g. a computer that is connected to the same router as the computer that's serving Subsonic) then the firewall on the machine serving Subsonic is blocking connections. You should also make sure that Subsonic is listening on all network interface by setting the following in subsonic.bat

set SUBSONIC_HOST=0.0.0.0

Note that 127.0.0.1 is special IP address for use with the loopback device. It basically allows a computer to communicate with itself. So don't use this IP address if you're connecting to subsonic from a different computer. If you're trying to access Subsonic on your local network use the local IP address of the computer serving subsonic (e.g. 192.168.*.*). To find out what a computer's local IP address run the following in "Command Prompt" on the computer you wish to know the IP address off.

It'll be in the list produced somewhere.

- If you can access Subsonic on your local network but can't from another machine on the internet then there are several things that can cause this.

-- You might be trying to use the local IP address instead of your internet IP address. To connect to Subsonic running on your computer from outside the local network then traffic must go through your router. So you must use your router's internet IP and not your local IP. To find out what your router's IP address is visit http://www.whatismyip.com/

-- Port forwarding might not be setup on your router. See http://www.portforward.com. Note there are two types of port forwarding manual and automatic (uPnP).

-- If you're trying to use a *.subsonic.org address that you've been assigned it maybe set to use the wrong address. To check run the following in "Command prompt"

Well, I thought I'd push my luck and see if you still have any patience left, delcypher.
I cannot connect to subsonic, either locally or remotely.
locally, i'm trying my subsonic workstation's local address (192.168.x.xxx:8080). No luck from a windows or linux workstation.
remotely, I'm using my ip address, discovered as you suggested with whatismyipaddress.com. Can't get there. I'm using a smartphone, but still can't get to the server I know is there.
I have the line items in Subsonic.bat that you mentioned.
I'm using 8080 in both subsonic.bat and port forwarding.
I have NO firewall up and running, at least while trying to make this work. Not even windows firewall.
Should I type "80" instead of "8080" in the .bat file?
Is UDP the same as uPnP? My router only gives me the choice of TCP or UDP. I have selected a setting labelled "both", even though the official guide suggests picking TCP.

I'm pretty much ready to pack this in; I'm spending WAY too much time trying to get this to work. I feel like i'm beating my head against a wall. Now, if its a simple matter of upgrading my router, I'm happy to do that. Otherwise (if UDP isn't the issue), I don't know what else to do.
Any suggestions are welcome.

so I thought I'd try a bit of investigation.
PfPortChecker couldn't ping my router at all.

I installed Subsonic 4.1 to another workstation on the network, and it found the localhost just fine (didn't need to do the standalone). However, I can't see THAT workstation from within the network either.
So neither workstation can see the other, using 192.168.1.xxx:8080
What does this say about my router?
I know I have the internal IP addresses correct, but just to cover the bases have tried most other nearby addresses.

Just don't know what else to try
