Corrupt SD card

Postby musicman » Thu Sep 16, 2010 3:39 pm

Hello all,

I had a strange problem today. I'm using subonic on my HTC magic (android app) and it works wonderfully (usually). I store saved Subsonic cache on my 16gb Sandisk microcard. My subsonic cache is set a 1GB. Today as I was streaming some music everything stopped and my Magic reported that the SD card was corrupt. So when I got home i immediately tried to backup anything that was on the SD card. windows has no problem recognizing the SD card and reports that I have only 1.5GB free on the card. This doesn't suprise me as I have normal mp3 albums also stored in the Music folder for when I dont have a 3G connection to listen over Subsonic.
Now it gets interesting. I copy the data over and windows tells me that the files to copy equal up to 50GB !? Strange but ok, I start the copy. When it finishes copying there are supposedly about 1000+ files that couldnt be copied. I compare the backed up files on my hdd and they equal up only to about 7GB. Again strange, windows says the 16GB limit is almost full. OK lets find out where the 50GB are coming from. Very quickly checking the properties of the folders leads it to be the subsonic folder. Into the subsonic folder, some more properties checking and I land in the last folders I was trying to stream to my phone. This folder registers as 50GB and it is filled with about 5 folders and 4 files with very unreadable characters (Similar to characters you see in a Hex editor with no readable characters in the file/folder names). Well, at this point it seems I've found the problem. Just delete those weird folders right? No go, Windows lets me delete them, acknowledges the delete but they dont disappear. I am at this moment running scandisk on the card to see if it can repair the error so I dont have to reformat and completely copy everything back onto it again but I don't think I will be so lucky.
So the question is: Is this a bug from subsonic or was it just an unlucky data write to the SD card? My subonic cache is set to 1GB and the copied files on the hdd show that it was only 900MB full so I had 100MB room still.
I have once had my HTC giving a bad SD card error but after rebooting all was ok again. I dont know if these 2 incidents are connected.
I assume reformatting will solve everything but I am a bit uncomfortable now thinking that streaming to my phone can crash the card as I have car navigation software and documents that I need to access all the time. I would hate to all of a sudden have a corrupt card when not at home.
So i'm sharing this info in case anyone else has experienced it and know what it might be. I posted this topic as I did forum search but didnt come up with any topics on SD cards. Sorry if this has been discussed before.

Thanks for any help or tips someone might have. I'm really a bit nervous now and thinking if I need to always have a spare SD card with me with my nav software on it :)

But besides this experience what a joy it is to use Subsonic! I have donated and registered as its absolutely worth the contribution.
Thank you so much Sindre for all the work you've put into this project.
My brother has also got one of the apple apps for his iphone. :)

P.S. Using scandisk fixed the error :D
The bad filefix files that were saved by scandisk add up to just over 4GB so the the lost space was connected to this problem also. After deleting them I now have 5.4GB free instead of just 1.4GB :D
