External Player with playlist not working

I've just installed Subsonic 4.1, and I'm having some problems setting up an external player with playlist. Once I've set up the player and add some tracks to the playlist, when I click 'play' all that happens is that the main 'now playing' frame goes black. No m3u file is downloaded.

This happens with both Firefox 3.6.8 and Chrome 6.0.472.63 on Windows 7. Internet Explorer 8 doesn't seem to want to get past the login page. Has anyone experienced the same issue?

Okay, this looks like it's a Chrome issue. Chrome keeps trying to open it with a plugin that doesn't exist. I've fixed it for Firefox. Does anyone know of a way to get Chrome to just download the m3u file instead of trying to handle it with a non-existing plugin?

I had the same issue and here is how I fixed it.

Why:
Default media player was VLC and VLC installed the VLC plugin in Chrome, causing the issue

How I fixed:
Go to about:plugins and disable VLC plugin.
when I tested this after I disabled the plugin it downloaded the m3u. I clicked on the downloaded m3 and selected always play.

This might work for you, maybe it is some other plugin that can be fixed the same way.
