One of my folders cannot be accessed from Android

One of my folders cannot be accessed from Android. I get an error message: "A network error occurred. Retrying 4 of 4." And then another error message: "A network error occurred. Please check the server address or try again later."

I can access ALL of my music folders from the desktop browser.

I have Nine folders in the root of my MUSIC folder. Eight of these folders contain between 1 and 30 GB of mp3 files. Each of these folders is organized with many sub-folders. I have no problem accessing eight of the nine folders.

The single folder that I cannot access from the Android, contains 150GB of mp3 files, well organized with sub folders.

Here is what I discovered: There seems to be a limit of about 30 to 40 GB maximum of mp3 files in each root folder, including the sub folders.

The folder that I cannot access becomes fully accessible if I remove all but about 35GB of files.

Is it just me? Is this by design? Is there a work around? Is it a folder limit OR file limit OR Gigabytes limit?

I know that I can break this folder up into 5 or more folders, but before I do, has someone else figured this out? Is there a way to make this work without dividing the large folder into smaller folders at the root level?

Same here. Can't access on Android. I can see the top level folders but cannot access the individual music folders. I can access from an external network.

My solution

I just decided since this did not bother anyone else enough to post... I just designed my own solution. It's not very much rocket science! I just split up all of my music such that no single level top folder contains more than about 20GB of files, including all sub folders.

Is that the issue? That it's limited to 20 Gigs per folder?

it is a function of the app timing out

No, it is not limited to 20G at all. It is a function of the app times out waiting for a "list" or "index of songs" in the folders. So, If you have a fast 3g connection, AND a fast Internet upload at home, AND a fast PC running as the server, you might be able to have as much as 35GB folders. But if you have anything slow, it is conceivable that you could only have 5GB folders. So I have found that for me, if I limit my data to 20GB per top level folder (including sub-folders) that I almost always do not "time out".

So I had a problem which I described in this thread.

http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtop ... 7457#17457

I followed your advice and broke down my 70gb+ folder which was consistently timing out into three sub folders, and now I can access them.

So clearly this appears something wrong with the android client.

One thing to note is that I didn't find much difference in performance whether I was on wifi or 3g - the time out for particular folders was similar.

What I don't get is that I have top level genre folders, and sub folder genre folders (which contain only a few folders) and then these are accessed ok, but the sub folders which themselves contain a lot of folders (200 in one case) get the time outs, so it doesn't seem to be just about the size of files contained in subfolders, but the amount of subfolders at the next level of the folder hierarchy.

Now none of my folders are appearing... I'm getting really really frustrated with this. Having donated and having it work previously I can't figure out why all of a sudden my folders are no longer found.
