Android Stopped Connecting

Postby clayjm » Fri Oct 08, 2010 12:40 am

For several months I was having no issue with connecting on a T-mobile android phone.

About 3 weeks ago the connection stopped and I assumed it was on my end.

I reset and upgraded firmware on my router.
Reset all the port forward settings.

Still no luck. I can connect with any computer on the network, and I can connect with the android phone on wifi but not edge or 3g.

I can also connect from other computers not on my local network, so I believe my port forwarding is setup correctly.

I started changing ports thinking maybe T-mobile was blocking ports. At one point I had port 8080 working for a couple days and believed everything was good to go again. However it's stopped working again and changing ports has not helped.

Through all of this the Subsonic demo server has never had an issue in connecting over wifi, edge, or 3g.

I want to say it has to be something on T-mobile or some kind of wall between T-mobile and Comcast but I'm not sure what to do from here.

I've disabled all firewalls at this point for troubleshooting.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try opening your subsonic webpage from your android web browser. If that doesn't work then your client for sure won't work. Try to get that working first.

Also make sure that you have donated. If you didn't then the android client will quit working after 30 days.

Trying to access through browser gives me a time out error.

and yes, I did donate.

Thanks for the quick response.

Which port is the Subsonic Demo server using?

I don't have any first-hand experience with Comcast or with T-Mobile, but I know Comcast does not allow servers according to their TOS. Also, Comcast is known for throttling traffic for bittorrent, etc. I wonder if they are doing something to prevent your server from working correctly.

Are you absolutely certain it works on external computers while it's not working on your Android?

Subsonic demo appears to be running on the same web server as Subsonic.org, which would mean it's on port 80.

Cheers,

I am able to connect to my subsonic server from a family members computer on a different ISP and can connect to it from a work computer.

The host entered is always the outside address as opposed to using local ip address to connect locally.

Originally had it working on random ports in the 20,000 range, after that stopped working I tried a variety and got 8080 working. Now that has stopped and I keep entering a variety of different ports hoping something opens up but it doesn't seem to be doing so.

I've now tried setting up the server on a different computer on the same network and connecting with a second phone also on the same carrier.

I want to blame it on comcast, that seems like an easy answer, but then I shouldn't be able to connect to the server from outside my local network.

I want to blame t-mobile but then the demo shouldn't work.

So it comes down to either something between tmobile and comcast (which seems unlikely) or something on my end. I've either got some setting or port on my server that doesn't match the demo server or I've got something screwy on my router end.

The frustrating thing is, nothing changed to stop it from working initially. One day it connected, the next it did not.

How are you connecting to your server? Are you connecting directly via your WAN ip address or are you connecting through a service like dyndns?

Try connecting by using your wan ip only.

I have tried both directly entering the IP and using dyndns.

Both worked previously, neither work now.

I too have the exact same problem as the OP. It's uncanny actually, and I've had these issues for about the same duration. I have been using the app and the web based site for many months now and am no stranger to port forwarding etc.

I can confirm that I can connect via local wifi both to the IP address and through dyndns, which was how I had been connecting previously. The problems arise when I try to connect through 3G on a Droid X with Verizon.

I will attempt to change some ports and see if that changes anything.
