hey all
I have been trying for some time to get my video streaming setup and going. For some reason I can hear the audio but cannot see any video. I can full screen the flash player and again I can hear but can't see anything.
I have version 4.1 (build 1802) and I have followed many tutorials on transcoding settings and what not. Right now I am trying to get MP4 videos playing (it doesn't work with any that I have tried, avi, mpg....).
Here are my transcoding settings for mp4
ffmpeg -i %s -f flv -y -s 384x240 -ar 44100 -b 192kb -ab 32kb -ac 2 -
I have installed codec packs on three of the machines that I have tried this on and all of them play audio but show no video
TIA all

Read through at the link above. Starting the player can be inconsistent, but it will play if set up this way. I sometimes have to refresh the browser a few times to get the player going.

Thanks for that. I have tried that page several times and no matter what I try I get audio but no video. I am wondering if I have screwed something up with all the changes I have made.

It's not hard to uninstall/reinstall and start from scratch. I do most of the testing on a virtual server, which helps, if you have the computing power.
It's not an easy setup, which is why I encourage everyone to read through the process a few times to familiarize yourself with all the details.
Even if you can't get the internal player to work, you should now have the basics in place to define and use an external player, such as VLC or Media Player.
Still nothing

I have re-installed the program. I now have version 4.2 build 1946. I followed your tut and I am still not getting any video only audio. Here are my avi > flv settings, could this be the issue?
ffmpeg -re -y -i %s -ar 44100 -sameq -deinterlace -f flv -

Looks good. I am currently doing this under ver. 4.1, so I can't tell you what issues are relevant to 4.2. I've found some avi's to be problematic when using the external player option, but that shouldn't cause issues with the internal player. Have you tried other formats?
I do plan on setting up a virtual server this weekend to start testing 4.2. I'll post here if I find anything helpful.

vaderham - when you hear the audio playing, go into the fullscreen jwplayer. now right click and toggle back and forth between the various 'stretching' and see if the video shows up

Hey Gary,
quick question - do you have the full screen BUTTON on the jwplayer? If not, any ideas on how to show it? I have dug through the code and spent a couple hours trying various modifications but no luck so far.
Thanks

To be honest, I'm a few mods past my original tutorial post, but yes I do have the full screen button on the right corner. You can also toggle full screen mode with a right click anywhere on the player. Since the post I upgraded to the 5.3 version of the player from the Longtail video site. 5.4 is now out, but I haven't tried it yet.
I'm also pretty sure that video is going to be part of a future SS release, but I don't know the timeframe yet. I've also had some emails suggesting that video playback may also become part of the Android app. Perhaps a bit aggressive for a 3g cell phone, but that would be pretty cool for and Android tablet over wifi n. Just read a post that the color nook is supossed to get Android 2.2 next year. Could be an interesting combination.
I really just continued the work some others had done in the SS 3.8 release. Let's hope Sindre puts out a video enabled version soon. I'm sure he a much better programmer than I am. I just a hacker.
Let me know if you make any headway or find anything else useful. I'd love to see this work more dependably.
EDIT: Another strange anomaly I found was that there is also a "menu" button that sometimes shows on the player bar. I still haven't figured out why sometimes I see it and other times it's just gone. My son has it on his computer all the time. It lets you embed code to the video or create an email link. I haven't tried using it, but it sure is strange that it's sometimes there, sometimes gone.

Yeah, it would be great to see video in the Android app. I hate to bother Sindre with any video related questions/requests since at the moment it seems outside the Subsonic's intended purpose (but I am keeping my hopes up

)
How in the world do you have that button?!

For the life of me I cannot get it to show up. I have messed with the flashvars, parameters, even tried jwplayer skins, upgraded to 5.4 and nothing seems to work. Using your transcoding parameters video works great (thanks by the way) and yes, using the right click option works fine when using a pc browser but until (if/when) the Android app can play video, I was wanting to use the Android's browser to do it. But of course, without that button I can't get the flash player into full screen mode.
I agree that streaming video over 3g is a bit of a stretch currently but it sure would be nice to load up Subsonic and watch a video in the breakroom at work (wifi)!

I started to wonder if this was actually a local flash player setting and what you found seems to support that idea. During my trial and error I ruled that out since the flash player looks the same (just Play, the Progress Bar, and Volume) in FF, IE, the Android browser, and IE on my wife's laptop. But maybe I should look back into that...

Just a few thoughts that may be a lnog shot, but what browser are you using? In general I find SS to look great in Chrome and I have been using it most of the time. Second, if you use IE on a 64 bit system, be sure that you have both the 32 & 64 bit vers. of Java installed.

FF is my browser of choice and yeah, even though I am on win7 64bit, I never use the 64bit version of IE (too much hassle for not enough gain).
But I figured out how to make the button show up...although not sure on the reasoning behind it yet.
I had left, and would still prefer to, the flashplayer dimensions at 340x24.
In order to get the button to show up, the height has to be at least 65.
Now the button shows up just fine. Can't believe I spent so much time on the flashplayer flashvars/parameters! I still don't like this because using SS for video would be few and far between and I don't like having the player take up more space - although I might just add the visualization plugin to jwplayer and learn to live with it.

Go figure. I'm streaming a video over 3g right now on my EVO 4G through the browser. It's working just dandy. No stutter, good quality picture and sound. Now if only i could remember what setting I used when I transcoded this video!
My goal is transcode some video, movies and TV shows into flv at reasonable quality to watch over 3g, then patch it into the video player in my Suburban for the kids to watch. Just a pipe dream, but fun to try.

In case it helps anyone else:
In playlist.jsp
Line 78: changed the height dimension to 65 (from 24)
Line 68: added a comma after id:"player1", and then on the next line add plugins:"spectrumvisualizer-1"
In order to get the playlist bumped down so I could see the first couple of entries:
Line 498: changed the height from 3.2em to 6.2em
