Subsonic 4.2 freezing during load

Hello,

I just upgraded to 4.2, but not for long.

Until 4.0 (if there were updates in between, I skipped them...), everything worked fine, except that the transcoding seems to be very slow. Might be my hardware, Subsonic is running on a archaic computer, using 1,25 Gb Ram and a 1.66 Ghz CPU. Sometimes the jukebox seemed to lag as well.

Hoping for improvement, I updated to 4.2. Installation was fine, but as soon as I opened the site from a different computer (haven't tried from the server itself as there is no proper browser installed), Ram usage went up to 100,2 Mb and got stuck there (in the Control Panel, I allowed up to 768 Mb). CPU usage went up to 92-96% and froze. The server froze until I terminated the Subsonic Service using Task Manager. On the client, the loading of Subsonic looks rather normal, except for the box in the middle that usually shows random albums, last heard, etc.
My browser said it was waiting for the Server to reply. Clicking on any link provided (e.g. in the artist list on the left side) lead to the same reply.

The server is running Windows Server 2k8 using Apache 2.0.63, Client XP Home using Firefox (latest version).

I went back to 4.0, as I could not even reach the settings to see if I can fix anything. Works now, but would be interesting if anybody else has experienced such trouble.

Btw, why does Subsonic launches lame.exe even when in Jukebox mode? Is it possible to add the necessary media codecs so it does not need to convert everything? What kind of codecs is available for Jukebox mode, maybe I can adjust it and turn off the CPU-consuming converting during playback.

If necessary, I can upgrade back to 4.2 to answer further questions.

I ran ver. 4.1 for quite a while and found it to be very stable and trouble free. I'm a Windows only type, so if you need codecs I suggest installing the klite codec pack on any windows client machine.

Noted that one, and I will consider installing it when I'll be updating all the software on my server next time. Thank you for the advice, maybe it's really going to save some CPU time.

Changing Subsonic isn't as complex as the typical windows software. There is no interaction with the registry that causes problems with most windows software. just stop the SS service from the SS tray icon control panel, delete the Subsonic directory (save music files somewhere else if you stored them under Subsonic), then just install whichever version of SS you want. I usually uninstall and reinstall Java just to be safe when I'm having issues, but all in all it doesn't take vey long and sometimes fixes the problems users are having.

I updated Subsonic several times by now, I usually only stop the service and install it in the same folder as the old installation without deleting the old files. Worked fine so far.

However, I encountered the same problems as described above now with both 4.2 and 4.0, including a nice Java error message:

Error
Subsonic encountered an internal error. You can report this error in the Subsonic Forum. Please include the information below.
Exception java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
Message Java heap space
Java version Sun Microsystems Inc. 1.6.0_17
Operating system Windows Server 2008 6.0
Server jetty-6.1.x
Memory Used 63 of 63 MB
Stack trace java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

Memory is definitely set to 1000Mb, I tried to reduce or increase this maximum without changing it. Will post more when I come home tonight or some time tomorrow.

When I returned home, I started stopping all Subsonic processes, services, and whatsoever. I re-installed it to the same folder, now using 4.2 again, without uninstalling 4.0 or any other remains before. Then I manually uninstalled the Java Runtime (didn't even realise, Subsonic was using it...) and reinstalled the latest downloadable version. Seems to be running now, we'll see. Last time it crashed after about a day showing the described problems.
I guess as long as I don't complain about it, its fine. Thank you, Mr. Mehus, for this software!
