I currently have 4.1 (build 1806) on Ubuntu 10.04. I want to try the beta of subsonic. What is best way to install? Remove existing?

Thanks

i use the Windows version and just install the new version over the old. All the accounts and settings are retained that way except for the port number in the Control Panel which always resets to 80. After the upgrade I just go into the SS Control Panel and reset the port number to the old setting. I've done this 3 times on 3 servers with no problems. Of course YMMV.

Stop old server (/etc/init.d/subsonic stop). Backup:

/etc/default/subsonic
/var/subsonic/db
/var/subsonic/subsonic.properties

If you changed SS server files... Backup:

/etc/init.d/subsonic
/usr/share/subsonic/subsonic.sh
/var/subsonic/jetty/.../webapp

Install new SS deb package: dpkg -i ...

Stop new server (/etc/init.d/subsonic stop). Replace from backup to new server:

/etc/default/subsonic
/var/subsonic/db
/var/subsonic/subsonic.properties

Check links in /var/subsonic/transcode

If you need to modify some SS server files. Install from Synaptic: Meld Diff Viewer (after this start Meld from GNOME menu / Applications / Programming). Compare old backup files with new files... Edit new files...

Start new server (/etc/init.d/subsonic start). Login to new server with user and password from old server. Check all settings...
