when i go to save the settings it says successfully forwarding port 80 but the next line says i am regeistered XXXXX.subsonic.org is registered, but could not connect to it. (ConnectTimeoutException)

What do I need to do. I cannot live with out subsonic!!!

Please change your port number..80 is often blocked by ISP or causes other conflicts. Use the UPnP setting to see if Subsonic can automagically open the new port on your router, or else learn how to manually forward your chosen port. Test any port changes with canyouseeme.org and your port.

I have tried to forward ports for ps3 and xbox and when i go to test i get timeout responses back....

Your choice: 1234, 5678, 4040, 8080. What router are you using?

What i don't understand is that when i try to forward ports within the router and then use a port checker it doesnt work or comes back saying its still blocked, i just installed the router today but its not the first time using a linksys.

I don't know if my ISP is blocking everything or what....i am quite lost.

Okay..it appears it would benefit to assign a static IP to your server, and set the port to that IP. Do a IPCONFIG on your server machine (dos prompt) and get it's current IP/subnet. Then, go into network settings for your lan/wlan adapter, and change TCP/IP properties from 'Obtain Automatically' to 'Use the following' and set it to your IP/subnet gathered from above. Close out, reboot machine and verify lan/wan access. Then open router config page and nav to Applications/Gaming, and select single port forwarding. Make an app called 'Subsonic' , give it 8080 as both Internal and External, both TCP/UDP is okay, and assign to the server machine's IP address above, and check ENABLE. Close out, reboot the router, and test with canyouseeme.org for 8080.

okay so i tried to switch the network settings to a static IP. but when I went back to the router i lost my internet connection.

do i need to put in anything for the DNS server under neath the IP and subnet?

do I keep the router setting on automatic? or switch it to Static?

Sorry..yes..the DNS should point to the routers local IP (eg. 192.168.1.1 or similar).

You can do either...I have an older router, so I simply assigned manual IP's to all my machines/devices, and turned off DHCP. You can also do the 'DHCP reservation' method mentioned in the manual, but I prefer no DHCP server running at all, imho.

Here's my 2 cents. And remember that advice is worth what you pay for it.

I assign all my fixed network devices a fixed internal IP address, but I start from the top of the range of addresses and work my way downward for servers and wired computers. That way they never get interferred with by DHCP which assigns from the bottom up. Everyone who visits these days has a laptop, ipad or some other wireless device, so I like to keep DHCP available for portable devices and war drivers.

DNS: This is perhaps one of the most nebulous concepts to grasp when you're trying to get a grip on networking and addressing. Any device that tries to resolve a www name to an ip address will look at the device defined that Might have the information. If that device can't resolve the name, it looks up the chain to the next device and so on until it finds a source that can translate www.name.com to 263.58.472.65 or whatever. So when you're trying to decide what to put in for primary and secondary DNS servers, you actually have a few good options. If it's 3am and you just want to get it over with and get online, entering your router's base internal ip will work. You can also enter the ip of your gateway device. Any address your looking for that isn't buffered in your router is going to go up and out for resolution anyway. The better option: Look in your router to see if it lists the DNS servers that your router uses that are provided by your isp. This is where your gateway device sends any request it can't resolve. If you find those addresses, you can enter them into any NIC on your network that has been set up for fixed ip and defined DNS servers. Alternately, you can specify any DNS server you like that works.

You can even use Googles! I think those ought to be pretty good.

And to add way TMI to gary's input, I use OpenDNS on my router, which logs all the traffic and processes filters, so I want all my devices using OpenDNS too...ergo, I point to the router/gateway.

yeah its still not working. I even had a friend who works in IT help over Facebook and he never had it. installed it to his PC and Phone and was streaming music in no time. he went over everything he did with me, i did the same. still nothing.

my router is setup to static. i am forwarding port 80 in my router....

don't know what else to do....

does canyouseeme.org ever say the port works? PM me your public IP.
