Editing tags with external player

Is it possible to edit tags using an external player and have the changes affect the actual files? It seems when editing tags via Windows Media Player, the changes are only made within the local machine. I assume I've been editing my WMP library and not the actual tags. The changes appear on my local machine's WMP list but not on any other when connected to Subsonic.[/list]
