Shouldn't the subsonic.org subdomain a-rec point to your external interface?

Mine is pointing to an IP completely unrelated to any of my interfaces. Any conjectures why?

I have a public static IP address (xxx.93.1.234) which is routed to my internal network through a pair of OpenBSD virtual machines running PF.

Subsonic is running on a virtual Centos 5.5 server on the internal network (192.168.xxx.42), configured for port 4202.

The PF machines are configured to relay connections to the external IP and subsonic port (xxx.93.1.234:4202) to the subsonic server at 192.168.xxx.42:4202.

This all works fine for external web browser access using either the external IP or my own DNS entry for that IP.

But if I try to use a subsonic.org address things go very wonky.

I enable the option in Subsonic, choose a subdomain name and click save. Subsonic reports "arley.subsonic.org responded successfully".

But, when I do a lookup on arley.subsonic.org I get a completely unrelated IP address (97.74.125.134).

I waited 72 hours to ensure it wasn't an old address that hadn't been updated somehow and there was no change.

I can unregister that address and re-register the server with a new subdomain name and it still registers the same incorrect IP in the a-rec.

Very bizarre.

Anybody have any clue what is going on here?

97.74.125.134 is the subsonic.org IP adress. That will be the rec for all xxx.subsonic.org, including arley.subsonic.org.

When a browser request arrives at 97.74.125.134 the subsonic.org server will see which subdomain (in this case "arley") was in the request and will then redirect the connection to your current IP address. In your case it's a static one (xxx.93.1.234) and will always be the same.
For the vast majority of people it'll be a dynamic address currently given by that subsonic user's ISP.

All redirect procedures are done at the subsonic.org server, so all subdomanis point to the same IP address. All is well.

Ok, slightly different question... any way to make all this work on some port other than 80?

Sure... change the port that Subsonic uses (using the Subsonic-agent in the tray if using windows) and then make sure that the port you choose is opened on your firewall and allowing traffic inbound to your subsonic server's IP address.

Then the next time the registration happens with the Subsonic.org servers, the redirection will be updated and will redirect to http://your.ip.add.ress:PortNumber
