just set subsonic up on FreeNAS and an using an Android phone client.
obviously i want to reduce the bitrate to save my phone data plane but there's max bitrate settings in the client (for wifi and mobile), the player settings on the server and the users settings ?
which do i set ? one or all of them and if they are different what takes priority
Ideally i want three settings
local freenas - on my local LAN wifi i want max bitrate
3G freenas - remote usage over 3G. i want a low bitrate 64k
remote freenas - remote usage over a wifi hotspot 128K
cheers
Glen

Settings / Users - max allowed bitrate for user. Don't use "No limit". No limit is a default for encoding program. For example: default for Lame is 128 kbps; default for FFmpeg is a 64 kbps. Check 320 kbps ...
Settings / Players - max bitrate for current player. One user allowed to use many players with different settings (for example: web, external, jukebox with different bitrate). Use "Clone player" to make another player for current user. If checked "No limit" - player use limit from user settings.

I'm having problems setting any kind of max bitrate. I have an android phone and am running FreeNAS 7.5.9898 with Subsonic 4.6. When I set any bitrate settings whether in the Settings/User or Settings/Player options, the android app looks like it attempts to download the song but it seems to stall out at 0 kbs. After a few seconds it displays the play button. In the playlist it shows an astrix next to the song as if it completed downloading it. In the subsonic file folder under the album name, a file has been created for the song(s) but the file size is 0. I hope this all makes sense. Any idea how to remedy this situation? I have an unlimited data plan for my phone however it still has a max speed and it's not required that I download a song in 320 kbs bitrate. It takes quite awhile for a song to buffer enough to where it's far enough ahead when I'm playing it and it doesn't have to pause in the middle.
Thanks for any assistance.

What happens when you play a song (or try to) on the demo sever?

It downloads and plays it perfectly.
I believe my server will trasmit the file in the original bitrate (128, 196, 320, etc) but I think there might be a problem trascoding it to a lower bitrate. I'm using the orginal or recommended transcoding configuration.

Bump. Anyone have any ideas why I can only play files in their original bitrate and SS won't transcode them to a lower bitrate for mobile devices?

Play a 320K encoded mp3 in the web player but set the player max bit rate to 128K
Then post the log here (assuming that it won't play).

OK... If I understood your instructions correctly under Players I set the Android player to use Web player and set the max bitrate to 128k.
The same thing as above happened. The Android phone starts to download the song but after a few seconds it stops downloading and acts like the song has downloaded completely however no data has been transfered (ie. the songs file size is 0).
This is the log from the time I started playing the song on my phone.

No I want to you play using a normal web client - keep the android device out of the frame.
Set the web player to max bitrate of 128k and play a higher bitrate track (make it down-sample)
If it doesn't play then post the log.
If it does then its the droid that has a problem - but I doubt that as it plays the demo server np.

OK... did as instructed. SS is not transcoding songs to a lower bitrate even through the Webplayer. Here's the log.
Both songs are 320 kbps.

Bump - Just moving this to the top. Looking for help or suggestions as to why my SS on a FreeNAS system won't transcode mp3's to a lower bitrate for playback. TIA

This appears to be an issue with the lame decoder on the OS
Try adding the Subwiji transcoding step
- Code: Select all
ffmpeg -f mp3 -i %s -ab %bk -v 0 -f mp3 -
This appears to make ffmpeg do the transcoding and may solve your problem.

Oh yes the beautiful force mp3 to mp3 failsafe encode

Whoops forgot to add 1 step disable the normal (default) audio transcode step 1st (un-tick that option in player)
