Subsonic Forum

OK, so I've been trying for a couple days to get Subsonic up and running and finally ditch my iPod for good, but I'm having some problems.

I have a static IP set on my PC that is running the subsonic server.

When I run IP CONFIG it lists my IP as 192.168.1.125 (what I set it to in the router interface), but when I go to canyouseeme.org to test the port, it thinks my IP is 67.87.2.230.

I can connect from within my home network, but can't reach my domain from anywhere outside the network.

My server is http://nicksmusic.subsonic.org.

Any help would be much appreciated. I tried a lot of the troubleshooting in this forum but can't seem to get it to work.

Canyouseeme is working just fine..it will always report your public IP, and never your private. You have to follow the directions in you router's manual to successfully open a port for Subsonic, verified by testing with canyouseeme.org until it can see the port open. Only then will outside access work. What router maker, revision and model do you have?

Congrats Funk#49. I purchased Subsonic 5 months ago and I have been trying to make subsonic run remotely but I have had no success. I have read Monroe's guide thoroughly but it doesn't work for me. I have tried different ports and canyouseeme.org shows them as closed. I have a D-Link Dir-825 router rev a. Can someone help me?

IP Address: IP of Subsonic machine
on TCP/UDP: select Both
on Port: 8080 for both public and private
Select 'Save Settings' above when done, then reboot router. Once router comes up, go to canyouseeme.org and test port 8080.

Try rebooting the router.

I tried alphawave7's suggestion and also tried rebooting my router but I am unable to get port forwarding to work. About 2 months back I purchased pfconfig to forward ports but had no luck. I even tried my old router which is a Linksys WRT54GS with dd-wrt and that didn't work. My ISP is Comcast, have you heard if they block certain ports? Thanks.

If your router has a firmware upgrade available, I suggest doing that...it seems your existing firmware is not working as designed, and may require a full factory reset and/or reflash of latest firmware to regain the default functionality.

edit: I'm unaware of Comcast blocking any ports, but 80 would be one of the first ports they would block for servers. I'd recommend something easy to remember, like 4040, 5050,etc.

Most problems are due to improper setup on the router. Setting a fixed internal ip address for the server and proper port forwarding rules on the router are essential for long term stability.

Never use port 80 - ISP's often use it or block it. 8080,8081, work fine. 808X always works. I've seen others use different port numbers that have caused install failure.

Start with a fresh Java install to the latest version. If you have Java already, uninstall, then do a clean install of the latest version. If you use a 64 bit browser be sure to get both 32 & 64 bit Java.

In Subsonic Settings/Network - UNCHECK " Automatically configure your router to allow incoming connections to Subsonic (using UPnP or NAT-PMP port forwarding)." make sure to hit the SAVE button, you may have to scroll down to see it depending on your screen size. UPnP or Plug & Pray works sometimes, but not very often and you're better off learning what's going on anyway. You're dipping your toe into the network mgmt. thing anyway, might as well learn what's going on as home networks don't get simpler as time goes on. As your network gets more complex, you're going to have to learn this stuff! No time like the present.

Manually assign a fixed intenal IP and static route to your server at the upper end of the address range of the router, out of the way of DHCP, e.g. 192.168.1.254

Set up your router manually. uPNP might work, but most often it doesn't. Learing how to do it will be a skill you'll love having as your network grows.

Check the Subsonic Control Panel to make sure it's using the right port you're going to use. I typically use 8080, 8081, etc.

Set up port forwarding in your router to direct traffic on the selected port to your server. Consult your router documentation to do this, they are all a bit different.

Learn your external IP address assigned by your ISP. Go to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ enter your SS port number and click the Check box to be sure the Subsonic port is open.

Test your setup by entering your external IP:port# to see if it connects. e.g. http://98.117.185.5:8084/ If it works, you're good to go.

GJ51, I tried your method but didn't get it working, alphawave7 my router has the latest firmware so that's not the problem. Also I just realized today that I have Vonage router vdv21-vd, I didn't even know it was router until I Googled it. I logged into the Vonage router and tried forwarding different ports but it didn't work. Then I completed removed the Vonage router and tried port forwarding and checked on canyouseeme.org and it gave me a timeout error. So after about 5 months of trying I am calling it quits. Would have loved to have my whole music collection in my pocket-oh well. Thanks for your help alphawave7 and GJ51.

Sorry it's so frustrating..but there IS a solution that simply awaits discovery. Knowing there's another router (and possibly an SPI firewall there too) does make the first efforts pointless. /sigh

As is often the case, the devil is in the details. Your Vonage router does NOT need to be in front of the router in the network. Vonage has several different units they've used over the years, but you should find out what you need to do to disable DHCP on the Vonage unit anyway as it will wreak havoc with your network if both units are trying to control DHCP. Disable DHCP in the Vonage unit and just plug it into the router or any switch on your network. I switched from Vonage to OOMA recently and the same strategy applied. All the VOIP vendors try to get you to install their unit in front of your router so that they get better bandwidth/quality. This may be an issue if you have almost no bandwidth, but on today's connection it's almost never an issue anymore. I switched from Vonage to OOMA, and now instead of $25/mo. I only pay $3.47/mo which is just taxes and fees from the govt.

If it's any consolation, all routers are different and all of them are pretty arcane when it comes to port forwarding. No doubt you just haven't hit the right combination for entering the forwarding properly. Perhaps the D-Link support people could walk you through it. Sorry it's been such a struggle for you. As always, I second Alphawave7, we'll be glad to help if decide to give it another try sometime. We both worked with another user that had the same difficulty that your having, but after several weeks, he finally got it to work. I think it was one of the highlight of his life! Let us know when you're ready to give it another go.

Just a quick note, you can also get your external IP address from the image in my Signature, it's in the bottom left hand corner next to Subsonic HELP?
Only YOU can see your ip address in the image, no one else can get the info.

GJ51, I recently switched from a land line to Ooma myself. Great phone service, but I can't get to subsonic from outside my house. In the network, no problem. But not from the outside. I followed Ooma's advice and put the device in front of the router. Honestly, the call quality is better, and none of the few hiccups we had when it was behind the router. But Subsonic stopped working (was working fine when Ooma was behind the router).

Any suggestions? My router is D-LINK IR 665
