Hi,

I've got aproblem with trying to stream video with subsonic. I've followed the following guide:

There is another guide I tried, same forum, linking to the one above, but that didnt work either.

Basically I try to run the video file, and it doesn't work. I click on the video file ont he list on the left, it loads up the cover art, I clcik the cover art. It loads the cover art again only the right size. Then I click on play and nothing happens

Can anyone help? I have the altest Flash player 10.x.x.x, using Opera 11, FF 3.8 ( I think is the latest it might be lower), even tried ie8, and no luck. I'm not sure where I'm going wrong.

I've tried CCCP codec pack, I've tried KLite Codec Pack, no luck. I've portforwarded, used https, nothing. I've asked my firne dto try he can login to me, the cover art shows up, but the video does not play

Thiose forum posts you linked to were kludges used before video was incorporated into Subsonic by the developer. Version 4.4 will play video without any tweaking. I'd suggest you uninstall Subsonic and Java, reboot your computer, then do a clean install of the latest java and then Subsonic 4.4.

Follow these instructions for Windows:

Most problems are due to improper setup on the router. Setting a fixed internal ip address for the server and proper port forwarding rules on the router are essential for long term stability.

Disable any DHCP services in any VOIP equipment you have. Only one device per network should handle DHCP assignments.

Never use port 80 - ISP's often use it or block it. 8080,8081, work fine. 808X always works. I've seen others use different port numbers that have caused install failure.

Start with a fresh Java install to the latest version. If you have Java already, uninstall, then do a clean install of the latest version. If you use a 64 bit browser be sure to get both 32 & 64 bit Java.

In Subsonic Settings/Network - UNCHECK " Automatically configure your router to allow incoming connections to Subsonic (using UPnP or NAT-PMP port forwarding)." make sure to hit the SAVE button, you may have to scroll down to see it depending on your screen size. UPnP or Plug & Pray works sometimes, but not very often and you're better off learning what's going on anyway. You're dipping your toe into the network mgmt. thing anyway, might as well learn what's going on as home networks don't get simpler as time goes on. As your network gets more complex, you're going to have to learn this stuff! No time like the present.

Manually assign a fixed intenal IP and static route to your server at the upper end of the address range of the router, out of the way of DHCP, e.g. 192.168.1.254

Set up your router manually. uPNP might work, but most often it doesn't. Learing how to do it will be a skill you'll love having as your network grows.

Check the Subsonic Control Panel to make sure it's using the right port you're going to use. I typically use 8080, 8081, etc.

Set up port forwarding in your router to direct traffic on the selected port to your server. Consult your router documentation to do this, they are all a bit different.

Learn your external IP address assigned by your ISP. Go to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ enter your SS port number and click the Check box to be sure the Subsonic port is open.

Test your setup by entering your external IP:port# to see if it connects. e.g. http://98.117.185.5:8084/ If it works, you're good to go.

If your still having problems. Clear browser cache. Reboot the server. If that doesn't work, uninstall/reinstall Java. If still no joy, try reinstalling SS right over the top of the current SS using the latest version.

thank you for the prompt response. Following your tips and links I was able to successfully share my video files and stream them.

Some of the videos I've made are 720p. I was wondering what kinda toll this woudl take?

My pc specs:

GTX560Ti
Core2Quad Q8200 2.8Ghz (oc from stock 2.3)
4GB DDR2 PC 6400 RAM
12mbps down/1.5mbps up

I guess I should stick to converting to avi perhaps, or it auto transcodes anyway right?

Subsonic is inherently a "weakest link" system. You have to consider all the links in the chain from end to end to determine what your particular limiting factors will be. I preformat all my video into mp4 or flv so that they can be played in JW Player without being transcoded. Transcoding takes a lot of CPU power and can become a bottleneck on even powerful CPU's as ffmpeg only utilizes one core per stream.

The other limitation is connection speed - at BOTH ends, You can have all the download speed in the world, but usually the bottleneck is the upload speed from the server hosting SS.

Subsonic is a truly remarkable application that runs on an incredibly wide array of hardware and software. Unfortunately, many users don't understand the limitations of their own configurations. This can lead to unrealistic expectations, or worse yet, the inability to have the patience to maximize the REALISTIC performance achievable with SS.

I have actually watched blue ray quality video on a state of the art laptop over a fios internet connection. I had to give it a couple minutes to buffer, but after about 5 mins. it played through without any glitches. The key is getting the right setup on the right hardware over good internet connection speeds.
