Hello Everyone.

I would like to know if there is a way to hide my external address from showing up in the web address bar when users are logged into subsonic?
In others words when my users login they see XX.XXX.XXX.XXX:8081, is there any way to mask or hide that to maybe show the subsonic address (xxx.subsonic.org)?

The only way i know Its possible is, If you have your own domain and use that instead of xxx.subsonic.org. A few people on here use their own domains including myself and users wont see the ip address.

But then all someone has to do is go to a command prompt and type "Ping your.domain.name" and they will have your IP address.

What are you trying to accomplish by hiding your external IP?

Very true you can resolve the ip address as any other. I was pointing out it is possible to use own domain if you want to and It never was a mission for me to hide my ip address.

That's true, if I use my XXXXXX.homeserver.com:port# domain address it retains the sddress in the address bar. No big deal for me either as I've given out my server addresses all over these forums and have never encountered any security issues.

I think we all have the same understanding that external ips can be easily accessed and that domain names are no form of security. The issue is why does the subsonic.org dns service replace itself with the ip. As minime mentioned, using another domain, as i do also, you can avoid this but for those using the subsonic.org service it would be nice to always have that in the url if for nothing else than aesthetic purposes. Most likely though, Sindre will have to be the one to answer this.

Oh, I can answer that...

Sindre is running a HTTP redirect service. When a user attempts to access xxx.subsonic.org, a query is sent to the Subsonic server which responds with a "302 - Temporarily moved" HTTP response which includes your IP address and port.

Your web browser than says "hey, that address is temporarily unavailable, so I will go to the temporary replacement address that the server provided instead" which is your IP address and port combination.

Sindre would have to change the model to a "proxy service" instead of a "redirect service" in order to do what you want... and then EVERY command that ANY registered user of subsonic issues would be sent to Sindre's servers which would then access your server, get the results, and send it back to the remote client.

I can't guess how many registered Subsonic users there are, but the load on his servers would be INCREDIBLE.

I would not count on it changing...

One of the big pluses to having WHS is the ability to connect to any of my SS instances using the servername.homeserver.com address. It also lets me connect to my Sharepoint as well as running remote connections to all my desktops at home. Many times when I'm out of town, I just connect to my primary destop to get my email and jut do my nornal stuff. I don't have to remember all my links and passwords that are already automated at home. Subsonic is tasty frosting on an already pretty nice cake.

Just use a Dynamic DNS service like www.dyndns.org to setup your own domain name. This will also resolve issues if you don't have a static external IP address from your ISP. It's completely free and fairly easy to setup.
