I was curious, what's the largest collection someone's used with Subsonic, and what were/are the speeds like? Looking into using Subsonic with a 500+ GB Music collection (from quantity, not file size) and wondering if I'll still get decent responsiveness from it.

I have a decent sized collection (a mix of Audio and Video) and find Subsonic very responsive. I have never had any real problems with access speeds though I did increase the "Memory Limit", initially which I found to really helped. I have also tried to make the file structure uniform though I'm not really sure that has made a difference but as your library gets bigger it probably does in some fashion.

My site's not all that big, but I've been on a few that are over 1TB. They all work just dandy!

But on my previous box, an Intel Atom, a refresh took some time. It was also running on a "Green" Western Digital disk. Now I use a hardware raidcontroller, and it's super snappy.

I'm running Subsonic with a little over 700GB of music and around 200GB of video and it runs great with around 5 very active other users. Obviously, it's subject to the ups and downs of your hardware but software side, I'd be willing to be that there's not a better option out there.

When you install Subsonic (or at any other time after), I strongly suggest increasing the amount of memory Subsonic is allotted. It's relatively easy but here's a tutorial. 512MB seems to be the sweet spot but I've never witnessed mine for go over 100MB.

You'd be absolutely amazed at how much load you can host if you format everything so that no transcoding is needed. I have 11 systems around the house, counting servers, desktops, laptops, and not including phones. One day I tried to see what it would take to overload the server. I ran around the house connecting everything to the same SS instance and loading multiple videos on each system. I still don't know where the stress point is. Streaming without transcoding takes almost no load at all.

+1 - There is no better option out there.

I have only about 300GB of music, but I also have my entire tv/movie collection hosted on my subsonic site which is over 2TB; so currently there is about 2.4TB of stuff being shared. Dont have any issues with slowness other than when transcoding multiple video streams at the same time, but thats not a limitation because of subsonic but hardware limitations on the server I have it running on.

I am just a hair shy of 3TB out of 12TB NAS running Subsonic. The only problem I have is the index on the left can be slow when refreshing or changing folders (using the drop down type).

But other then that it is quite fast.

Performance is consistently reported to be a bit slower on NAS devices. Understandable. I just bought another Samsung F4 2TB drive for $75 from Newegg. These drives outperform many 7200 rpm drives, run cool and quiet. Ideal for server storage of any kind. I built my servers in Antec 300 cases, which have lots of room above and below the drives for great cooling. Two lowspeed 120mm fans in front of the drives and they run within a degree or two of room temperature which ensures long drive life. I stay away from NAS drives because they usually run hot, although I'm sure there may be some configurations that are better than others.

5TB (a lot of movies and tv though) and everything is just fine. No issues at all really.

Subsonic should actually report audio and video files separately now that video is officially supported.

I have 8 of these drives in my server. They rock! Highly recommended, but make sure you update the firmware on older varieties to prevent the "bad block" issues.
