I'm working on developing a client (not mobile) and want to clarify if my users will need to donate to get a license. The client app will sit on the same network as Subsonic (ie not accessing from the public).

Only the server needs to be licensed, so as long as you are having them connect to a licensed server then you have nothing to worry about.

AFAIK, this is correct. Apps are 30 day trial for the end-user, and further use requires a license key/donation to the SS project.
