Android streaming/downloading issues

Postby FirstTracks » Thu Apr 14, 2011 8:39 pm

I continue to work through a new installation of Subsonic. For one thing, I've got to say that I'm impressed with how well things are working out so far. This morning, though, I discovered a problem with the Android app that I searched for here and found similar issues regarding playback skipping/stuttering, but nothing specifically related to what I found this morning.

I'm running the Android app 2.7 on a Sprint Epic 4G running the stock Froyo 2.2 but rooted. Up until this morning I had only used the Android client in the home, both on Wi-Fi and on 4G without issues. Today, though, I drove 30 miles to my office. I found myself occasionally dipping out of 4G and into 3G and back. Our "4G" service in many areas near Salt Lake City also has a download rate of about 1Mbps, which of course is far from optimal. When this would occur the songs in the playlist would stop downloading and would not resume the download following the switch in data service. I couldn't figure out how to get the current song to resume downloading, and about the only solution to getting the phone to resume playback was to skip forward to the next song and to let that start downloading. I also had to pause the song for a while once it starts to let more of the song buffer than what the app was willing to do, in order to prevent pauses in playback.

FYI, in settings I have "Max bitrate - Mobile" set at 128 kbps but this didn't solve the issue. Cache size is set at 500 MB and "Songs to preload" set at "unlimited."

I would think that if there's a momentary break in data service the app should pause the download, and when data service resumes the download should resume as well. Has anyone else experienced this behavior? Does anyone have any ideas regarding a solution?
