Subsonic Forum

I am on a business trip this week and tried accessing my music - perfect time where I would want to use subsonic. However, for the first time since getting everything up and running a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't access my music.

This morning I logged onto my home computer which runs Windows 7 (where the music is stored) by using logmein (remote access) and I could immediately see that at least one of the issues is... the subsonic icon in my control panel was red. I opened it and in the Service Status dialog box it shows: "Not running. Auto-start."

I tried simply clicking on the start button but nothing happens. I tried re-booting my computer two times and same issue. It's not the easiest to try diagnosing the problem from a remote computer (at least for me). However, I really want to get this rectified as I will be on the road for the next week and would love to have access to my music. Questions...

1. What are some reasons why the control panel would show "Not running"?
2. What can cause subsonic to stop running?
3. Anything I ought to check or do to get started with diagnosing the problem?

Well, after spending a couple of hours trying numerous things, I finally got it working properly again so I figured I would post what I did in case it may help others later. While I still don't know why out of the blue the control panel showed that subsonic wasn't running and I was unable to re-start it, as a last resort (until getting back home) I tried removing subsonic and re-installing. This did the trick. I suppose I should have tried this about an hour ago, but thought there should be something I could do to get things running again.

I still would like to know what could have caused this so if it happens again, I will be in a better position to diagnose and fix the issue without resorting in uninstalling and reinstalling the program. At any rate, remote desktop came in very handy this afternoon as I am several hundred miles away from my home desktop computer.

If this should happen again, you could try clicking on the start ball and entering "services" in the search box. Open the services console and find Subsonic. It should show Status = "Started" and Startup type "Automatic." If you highlight the service the Stop and restart option will appear in the top left of the window. Attempting a Restart this way may have fixed the problem, unless there was something wrong with the original install.

If you double-click on "Subsonic" it will open the Properties window. This is where you can change the Log On definition that needs to be updated for logging into network shares that need user permissions.

Interesting... I had no idea I could access the settings this way, regardless of whether that would have helped it is good to know. What is interesting to me is that I haven't changed a thing on my desktop computer the past two weeks and out of the blue I have this problem. I tried doing several things to fix the problem to no avail. However, a simple uninstall and reinstall was all that was needed. I still wonder what could have caused the issue. I love subsonic and therefore am trying to learn as much as I can so that when the next issue comes up, I will be in a better position to resolve it. At any rate, thanks for your reply and info!
