Until I get some search issues resolved, I have been largely relying on the folder feature of Subsonic to find tunes. In general, I have my music divided into genres and then sub genres. For example:

Classical
--baroque
etc.

Contemporary
...

Jazz
--acid
--blues
--bop
--christmas
--compilations
--contemporary
--cool-smooth
etc.

This afternoon, I was trying to find an album by Wynton Marsalis, whom I have filed under "contemporary" (lower case). When I look under the folder listing on the left-hand side of Subsonic, here's what I see under the "Cs:"

C
Christmas
Classical
Compilations
Contemporary
cool-smooth
Cosby, Bill

So, you can see that the "cool-smooth" sub genre appears, but "Contemporary" is actually the root of all of my contemporary music, not the "contemporary" sub genre under Jazz.

Any idea what is going on here? Is there a setting that I am missing, or is this a bug?

Have you tried a forced rescan of your library?
Maybe some stuck entries in the DB?

I've done multiple rescans, and some search return results from the "contemporary" folder, so Subsonic is aware of it. I am wondering if it is an issue of case, since the names are virtually the same, save for the first character?

How would one go about deleting the DB and starting over--which I would assume would unstick any entries?

Deleting the database pretty easy, just do a search for delete database and I'm sure you'll find the instructions. I think your problem is more likely due to an overly complex storage scheme. SS really like it when you use the KISS method. SS prefers x:Music\Artist\Album\tracks and works best when the files are organized this way. You can still do segregation by using multiple directories organized the same way. In your case, if I were to organize your collection, I would devote a drive to music then create seperate directories.

e.g.

X: labeled Music Drive as the volume label

then create directories

X:\Classical\Baroque\Artist(or Composer)\Album\Tracks
X:\Classical\Opera\Artist(or Composer)\Album\Tracks
X:\Classical\Romantic\Artist(or Composer)\Album\Tracks

X:\Jazz\Acid\Artist(or Composer)\Album\Tracks
X:\Jazz\Blues\Artist(or Composer)\Album\Tracks

etc.

Then just set up the folders in Settings.

Most users just use X:\Music\Artist\Album\tracks and let the database let search find the genres, but if you have a large collection it would probably be helpful to be more sophisticated in the library organization.

Keep in mind that most OS's limit the total number of characters to 255 for directory entries. That seems like more than enough, but I've helped several users that had created very complex storage schemes that exceeded those limits and turned out to be the source of their problems.

If you have a directory like C:\Users\Public\Music\Classical\Baroque\17th Century\Vivaldi\Philadelphia Philharmonic\The Four Seasons\Tracks it gets to be a bit much.
