Most problems are due to improper setup on the router. Setting a fixed internal ip address for the server and proper port forwarding rules on the router are essential for long term stability.

Never use port 80 or 443 - ISP's often use or block them and these are also the default ports on WHS for the remote login page. 8080,8081, work fine. 808X always works. I've seen others use different port numbers that have caused install failures.

READ: http://monroeworld.com/android/subsonic/ This is the Windows tutorial but most of the concepts apply to any setup. Specific setup instructions for other Operating Systems are available in the Tutorials section. http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=6 and on the Subsonic website at http://www.subsonic.org/pages/installation.jsp

In Subsonic Settings/Network - UNCHECK " Automatically configure your router to allow incoming connections to Subsonic (using UPnP or NAT-PMP port forwarding)." make sure to hit the SAVE button, you may have to scroll down to see it depending on your screen size. UPnP or Plug & Pray works sometimes, but not very often and you're better off learning what's going on anyway. You're dipping your toe into the network mgmt. thing anyway, might as well learn what's going on as home networks don't get simpler as time goes on. As your network gets more complex, you're going to have to learn this stuff! No time like the present.

Manually assign a fixed intenal IP and static route to your server at the upper end of the address range of the router, out of the way of DHCP, e.g. 192.168.1.254

Set up your router manually. uPNP might work, but most often it doesn't. Learing how to do it will be a skill you'll love having as your network grows.

Check the Subsonic Control Panel to make sure it's using the right port you're going to use. I typically use 8080 - 440, 8081 - 441, etc. Skip 8083 - 443 to avoid conflicts with WHS.

Set up port forwarding in your router to direct traffic on the selected port to your server. Consult your router documentation to do this, they are all a bit different.

Learn your external IP address assigned by your ISP. Go to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ enter your SS port number and click the Check box to be sure the Subsonic port is open.

Test your setup by entering your external IP:port# to see if it connects. e.g. http://98.117.185.5:8084/ If it works, you're good to go.

hello again.. thanks for replying rapidly..
i think i am forwarding my ports correctly because there are a few other things working with port forwarding on my network. my internal ip is static as explained on http://www.portforward.com and i use that as well with other stuff with no hitch. when i check my forwarded port (not 8080,8081,80 or any of the isp "used" ports) at http://www.canyouseeme.org/ it says all good and " Automatically configure your router to allow incoming connections to Subsonic (using UPnP or NAT-PMP port forwarding) " was already unchecked and it displays a message that my router is found then it goes on to say "port forwarding disabled", and that is the puzzling part because by any other indication it is enabled and the port is open. another thing, you say to check the settings with the external ip and see if it connects.. ive tried using the external ip number that http://www.canyouseeme.org/ told me i had with the :port# and that didnt work, but trying fixed internal ip :p# opens the SS control panel in my browser ..does that mean the static ip is good and set ? i have read and followed all the relevant guides to port forwarding my router on http://www.portforward.com before and during the SS setup, and up until now it worked quite successfully but this time im baffled. i hope you can help.
thanks again.

Something is definitely wrong if the internal ip:port# is opening the SS Control Panel and not the SS logon page. On the host computer, right click the green SS tray icon and open the SS Control Panel. What port is assigned for http? Disable the SSL port until you get http access established.

Also check that you can open SS local instance from the tray icon and that it runs properly.

Just because a port is open, does not necessaarily mean that it is being sent to the right address. I've never used port forward.com, so I don't know what it is doing, but I do know that if you have SS set to operate on an specific port and it is properly forwarded to the host computer's internal ip, and SS is configured to listen to that port, everything will work.

You say that Canyouseeme.org says it's all good. Plesase be more specific. Does it report that the http port you have set SS to is open? Is it possible that you have that port in use by something other than SS and there is a rtouting conflict?

If you have no other programms running on 8085, I'd suggest trying to set up SS on 8085. I recently discovered that WHS 2011 uses 8080 for internal use, so that's one that we may want to start staying away from. AS always, I advise that no one should use 80, or 443.
