Changing IP problem or Global bitrate limit?

Postby kapz » Wed Jun 21, 2006 7:31 pm

Hello, I have been testing subsonic and it works great except for one problem. I use the WAP interface on my Treo600 to build the playlist and then use Pocket Tunes to play the stream. All my mp3's are encoded at 256k and I love the auto down sample feature of subsonic. The problem is every time I logon to the sprint network I get a different IP and a new IP is entered in the Player dropdown area for the user I made (user@ip). So the max bitrate gets reset to MAX for the new IP.

Is there a global max bitrate in the config file that will always force 56k as the bitrate?

Thanks

Cool setup!

You can specify which player to use in the stream URL, for instance:
Code: Select all
http://yourhostname/subsonic/stream?player=3&suffix=.mp3

Does that solve your problem?

Thanks for the help. This method could work. I will test this in the field and see how it works.

Sindre,

The method above will work for my mobile needs. But I still would like to have any new player (if I gave the web address to friends) forced to a fixed bitrate. I have limited upload speed and don't want to stream my mp3's at the original encoded bitrate (256k). Is there any way to force all players to a fixed bitrate?

Much thanks.

I have one small suggestion. In the WAP interface it would more efficient to have checkboxes next to each song (default all checked) so when browsing an album only checked songs will be added to the playlist (when clicking ‘play all’ or ‘add all’).

I have this problem too. I use a Nokia E61 and the IP I log on from my WAP phone is different from when I connect with the player on my phone.

Would it be possible to have a playlist designated for all "null" sessions?

This way we could just point to http://yourhostname/subsonic/stream

Is this a possibility? Have an option in the settings for "NULL" session playlist.

This would be easier then having to use: "http://yourhostname/subsonic/stream?player=3&suffix=.mp3"

Thanks! Cool program!

Yeah, I understand that can be a bit annoying. However, I don't think your suggestion would work very well in a multi-user context, since all mobile users would in effect share the same playlist.

The good news is that I'm planning to add a new XHTML-based interface optimized for PDA's and high-end phones. This will hopefully improve the usability a lot. The player ID can then be stored in a cookie, so that you get the same player every time. Also, the player will (hopefully) start automatically, in the same way it's done in the normal web interface.

By the way, how does that work on your phone? If you download an M3U file in the browser, does the player start automatically? (Unfortunately, I don't have a suitable pda or phone to test with...)

Unfortunately, I can't download a playlist from the broser in my phone and have it start to stream in a media player. The built in media player on the Nokia E61 doesn't support streaming.

When I connect to edit or set a playlist using my phnoe browser, I have one IP. When I start my streaming application, I get a different IP.

I have been using the player# and this seems to work okay:
File1=http://x.x.x.x/subsonic/stream?player=1

I can then at least configure a playlist or set up multiple playlist (ie. genre based) and set multiple stations to choose in my streaming application.

I haven't really found a good stream player for Symbian.

I am currently using Nokia's open source "Internet Radio for S60".
hxxp://opensource.nokia.com/projects/s6 ... index.html

It requires me to edit a playlist and point to my server. Kind of a pain as I have to edit the files offline and then upload the shoutcast.pls to my phone. The application reads that file on startup for the list of stations.

I have tried Muzee: hxxp://gallery.mobile9.com/f/39421/

But I find it annoying to enter in alphanumeric URLs with only the number pad. The trial version only last a for a short period of time. Not even long enough for me to enter my URL as a preset station.

My request for a default null value was for more of an Internet Radio type function. If you connect with nothing set and subsonic doesn't know who you are, you get playlist "X".

Defining the Player=x in the URL works great though.

Thanks for all of your work!

How difficult would it be to add a feature to start the stream (M3U even) from the wap site? After a lot of research I found this thread, and it DOES work, however in order to stream I have to create a playlist using the wap page, then go to TCPMP (a great media player for Windows Mobile), key in the URL http://myhost/subsonic/stream?player=1&suffix=.mp3, then if I want to change a track or change the playlist, I do everything all over again.

It seems that it would be terribly easy to start the stream from the wap page. That is really the only thing now that makes me somewhat miss Orb, as their mobile streaming page and transcoding features are amazing, including a bandwidth test and auto-transcoding depending on that (to name one).

I actually believe that mobile streaming is one option that can set Subsonic ahead of all the other applications, and I think it's a feature that is more in demand than you may realize Sindre. Anyway, please consider this feature. You have done an amazing job with this application. Thanks!
