Tuning lame for better efficiency

I'm running into the issue that Lame is using to much CPU power on low powered ARM cpu based nas systems. according to the amount of stutter, I'm missing about 5~10% power on the fastest arm based QNAP I have.
Is there any option to tune or recompile lame for better performance? Or might there be a more efficient decoder then lame?
A prebuffer option to prebuffer a song for 30 secs before playing could also be a solution. Making this work on low powered effcient NAS systems like the QNAP would add a lot of enthousiastic users for subsonic, so any help is greatly appreciated.
