I started using subsonic and iSub for 4-5 days, but i am facing a problem. I don't seem to be able to access my subsonic music through edge on my iPhone. It works great when i turn wifi on, but not through edge. I am getting these types of screens:

I believe the problem lays somewhere on my subsonic/network configuration, and not on the above apps.

Problem Description: Not able to access subsonic outside of home network
Troubleshooting Steps:
- I have set subsonic to automatically configure my router, and by the looks, it should work fine


- I also checked my router and the port is there (under Forwarding/UPnP):


- I have also forwarded this port through port forwarding, the problem still remains.
- I have completely disabled firewall and restarted pc&router, problem not solved.
- I tried accesing subsonic through myname.subsonic.org and it just leads me to the main subsonic webpage (subsonic.org/pages/index.jsp)
- I have updated the routers firmware

EDGE works fine on other web pages and mail.
My subsonic server is running on XP SP3 and Iphone on iOS 4.3.3.

Please, see if you can help me on this issue.

Go to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ enter your SS port number and click the Check box to be sure the Subsonic port is open.

Error: I could not see your service on 84.xx.xx.xx on port (881)
Reason: Connection refused

But the above IP is the external one not the internal one, and i have configured my router to forward that port to my internal IP.
That's how it should be done right?

I just tried Audiogalaxy and it works through edge without any problems. The only drawaback is that there is no way to choose the bitrate you want to be streamed through edge (iSub has this).

When you are on wifi within your own network your phone obtains an internal ip from your router and the communication between the phone and the server is done within the local network using local ip addresses (typically 192.168.1.X)

When you use EDGE you are connecting from outside your local network and have to communicate THROUGH the router to get to the server. This requires that proper forwarding rules be set at the router so that the request from the internet is translated and passed to the local ip address of the server hosting Subsonic. If Canyouseeme.org cannot successfuly see the server at the correct port address you will never make a connection.

It's a windows oriented tutorial, but the advice regarding router set up and network configuration may be helpful.

Can someone please help me out here? I cant seem to be able to do this. I set up a static IP and did all the other steps, still http://canyouseeme.org/ says "Error: I could not see your service on" and Subsonic does not work when accessed outside of my home network. Audiogalaxy (which probably is using a port as well) is working fine outside of my network, and other services which are slightly similar in nature (uTorrent remote) are also working outside of home network. The main problem seems to be subsonic

You seem to be running another service on port 80, so what port did you open on your router?

Yes. It means that your system was able to send the name you registered to the subsonic.org server, but it cannot verify the connection to your server because the port you're using is not responding.

The most common problem encountered in setting up Subsonic is setting up the router to properly forward the designated port to the system hosting SS.

DO NOT use port 80 or port 443 with Subsonic. It is often blocked by ISP's or used by other programs. try 8085 and 485. Establish the http connection over 8085 BEFORE you attempt to enable https on 485.

You will not be successful until you get Canyouseeme.org to verify that the port is open.

Open the SS Control Panel. Set SS to use port 8085. Verify that SS is working by right-clicking the tray icon and opening the local instance of Subsonic. If the local instance opens on http://localhost:8085 then you know that it's running on the right port and all you have to do next is establish communications through the router.

IT"S ALWAYS THE ROUTER.

Read your router documentation carefully. If you have another service running successfully, such as Skype, it may give you a template for successful setup. The forwarding rules must be set up correctly for this to work. If Canyouseeme.org doesn't verify that the port is open you have to investigate again. It's always in the router. Setting up forwarding is often arcane and obtuse and I still get it wrong on occasion when I edit mine, and I've done it hundreds of times. All router are different and the design of the tables are unique, but once you get it set right it will work.

Could you give me more details on how to use skype to test if portforwarding is working?

I also just discovered that the WAN ip address as seen on my router, is totally different from the ones i see of canyouseeme and whatismyip websites. Is that normal?

NO. You normally only have one external ip. Try to use the external ip that the router is showing to access your SS site. Use external ip:port# to see if you can connect. PM me if you want a test from outside.

You also might want to do a router reboot.

If you have Skype installed and working then it must have made entries for frowarding in your router that can be read and used as a template. If you don't have Skype, don't bother. We should be able to get this working.

What is your ISP's gateway device/modem and what router do you have?

- Did a router reboot, and i am still not able to access subsonic from edge. I was able to access it in my local network by using my WAN ip:port.
- The Default Gateway under WAN is: 10.0.0.1
- My router is TP-LINK TL-WR340G
- And it seems my internet connection is of this type:

@sbnic, I'm happy to help you get this set up over Skype. The screen sharing feature makes it very easy for me to help you troubleshoot the problem and get set up, whereas going back and forth over forum posts and emails can take forever.

Please send me an email at support@isubapp.com and we can figure out a time to do the Skype chat. Usually only takes a few minutes over Skype to resolve port forwarding issues unless it's something really unusual.

Just to be sure: im 100% sure that my internet is of this type:

"RFC 1918 defines a set of 3 IP ranges that are not routed across the Internet and can only be used on local networks. You will sometimes see these used on ISP networks, where the devices can only be accessed from within the ISP's network, not from the rest of the Internet.

There are 3 IP ranges defined in RFC 1918:

10.0.0.0/8 (10.0.0.0-10.255.255.255)
172.16.0.0/12 (172.16.0.0-172.31.255.255)
192.168.0.0/16 (192.168.0.0-192.168.255.255)
If you ISP or provider allocates one of these IP ranges as your WAN IP then your device can only be reached from within your ISP at best.
....The problem is that if you visit any of the web pages that claim to tell you your IP address they will tell you the IP address your ISP is NATing you behind...
Check the WAN IP address of your router - if it looks like 10.x.x.x, 192.168.x.x or 172.16.x.x to 172.31.x.x then you have what is known as an RFC1918 IP address (often referred to as private addresses). You will need to contact your ISP to find out how to get a public IP address, or have traffic routed to you. Until that is done you won't be able to get anything else working.

You can use one of the many web pages that will tell you what your WAN IP address appears to be. So even though i have this issue, you believe that i will be able to stream Subsonic outside of my ISPs network by just setting proper port forwarding?
