Subsonic Forum

Hello, I am hoping that someone can help me, or at the very least tell me that I am totally screwed.

I just updated all of my networking equipment. I now have a new N router: Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH running DD-WRT v24SP2 std (I have run it before back on my linksys WRT-54G so I understand how it works). and I now have a Docsys 3.0 Modem: Motorola SurfBoard sb5120. Using Charter Cable on their standard service.

I switched from a Linksys 310N V2 [WORSE Router I ever owned, constantly overheated and locked up] with a Scientific Atlantic WebSTAR DPX100 (Docsys 1.1 I believe).

Now under the old setup I had no issues in connecting to subsonic (unless the router had locked up and I had to unplug it for at least an hour ) After updating it via the charter web process I lost all connection and have been unable to connect to the server at at. I don't know if it matters at all but after the change my computer went from a 15.x.x.x range to a 24.x.x.x range.

I have port forwarded all ports I can think of and I have even tried using UPnP, I have run Shields Up multiple times and it is showing my ports are stealth, but I can't access my server. I am assuming that charter has started to crack down on people who are running servers on their system. But if anyone has had any luck with a similar situation of getting a server running under charter on a DocSys 3.0 modem in the 24.x.x.x address space especially would be useful.

P.s. If anyone knows any ports that might be unblocked, let me known, I will try to see if it works.

I was curious if anyone had any success with this problem in the past.

Thank you for posting a link to the sticky, I know how to use search and have followed it and re-verified my settings multiple times [including once again just for fun]).

Now, if I could actually get some constructive help. I have already followed this guide. (including re-installing Subsonic multiple time, and I have also tried every networking trick and resource that I have access to from when I was taking classes in networking and NovelL Networking [why did MS have to change the terms just to suit them and not use the existing standards including having opposing definitions on various terms]).

What I am really looking for is if anyone who has a 24.x.x.x range IP address is having any issues with getting subsonic to work preferably if they have Charter as their ISP. If they have had success, tell me what ports they have had success with (via PM if they don't want it blocked if they are afraid that Charter with block it.).

P.s. I have tried to even place my server in my router's DMZ and tried random ports and I still get a Timed out error.

Typically, ISPs block port 80. I'm not sure about Charter.

I wouldn't think incoming port 8080 or 81 would ever be typically blocked.

If you put the old router back in its place, does it work? I doubt Charter suddenly started blocking your connections when you happened to get a new router.

I applaud you for your use of Buffalo hardware and DD-WRT. Those are my personal preferences when I have to use appliance hardware too.

Oh, but he must have already tried that, after having followed all the instructions in my "not so constructive" guide. Besides, have you had Novell instruction? I know I haven't. This is way out of my league.

Sorry GJ51 if I seemed like a dick in the last post. I have attempted to solve this problem multiple ways. then the damn forum keeps kicking up a 'not currently available error' so it took me 5 posts to get my reply to post. Thus when I eventually got the reply to post it was very freedom of thought and not well composed nor was it placed through my usual rereading for tone before it posted. So I am sorry if I took out my frustration out on you. I just felt upset since it is commonly assumed that the user is an idiot and post the sticky. (You might want to change the link to sticky post so that it says "Have you tried this first, [give the link]. If so are you still having the issue?" It seems less terse and will make you seem more comforting and hopefully avoid anyone who reads your post and over reacts like I did)

Second off (now that I apologized for being an ass):

Kirk: I tried it with both routers (both have the same problem. I even went ahead and tried both of the Buffalo firmwares with my previously working setup) and I was curious if there might be something that I didn't know about as far as the ISP went or if anyone had any prior issues with a SurfBoard modem/DocSys 3.0 and had encountered any solutions, or even any similar problems.

I have attempted to use ports 80, 8080 - 8096, 444, 443, 4040, 45665, 65555, 1024, 35, 9085, and a few others (I had those written down to verify I was typing in the correct ports). I have tried them with both UPnP on and off.

The only thing I haven't tried is changing back the Modem since I went from one I was borrowing (returned to my friend) to one I own.

Which unit is responsible for LAN/WLAN firewall? That would determine which unit gets the port opened. My setup has the 2Wire modem as WAN access only, all other activity is controlled (LAN, SPI firewall,etc.) on my Buffalo running DD-WRT. Maybe enabling SPI Firewall on Buff, and disabling on the modem?

Unfortunately there isn't a firewall on the Modem, so I can only assume that the ISP has a firewall that I can't reach nor do I have rights to the settings.

My apologies as well. I share your pain and frustration with the forum and have requested that Sindre get it fixed.

The problem has to be in the forwarding not being set correctly. My suggestion would be to install Skype. It always manages to set itself up on almost any router setup. If it sets up successfully and works then you can look at the entries that it makes as a template for making your Subsonic rules.

All routers are unique, they all seem to throw just enough of a wrinkle in their routing tables to make it frustrating.

Your ISP can't just block all the ports or apps like Skype wouldn't work. most cable modems/ ISP's only block 80 incoming.

Damn it!! Skype was a wonderful idea, and it connects just fine (WTF is with this problem!!!!!) I have tried even to use the ports that Skype used (after shutting down Skype)

Well I guess that this is it for me today, the angrier and more tired you get the more likely you are to cause more problems.

That's good actually...now ensure NO ports are open in DD-WRT, and reboot the router. THEN open only port 8080 for Subsonic (I do both TCP and UDP even though UDP is supposedly uneeded). Reboot router again, then test with a client on canyouseeme.org for port 8080.

I treat these things like a challenge, which allows me to spread the 'anger' over a much wider area. There are always workarounds and fixes, they simply await a proper path to their solution.
