Connection timeout when browsing folders or preset filters

Postby tfish77 » Sat Jul 02, 2011 5:00 pm

<-------------------------Subsonic Help Request---------------------->
Problem Description: Android app times out when I try to browse folders or access "Random" or "Recently Added."
Troubleshooting Steps: I have tried automatic port forwarding and manual port forwarding. I have tried using the subsonic-hosted hostname (i.e. myusername.subsonic.org) as well as my own registered hostname as well as my computer's external IP address. When I hit "test connection" it comes back immediately as "Connection is OK. Server unlicensed." But when I try to load any of my music folders [with more than one song inside] or use the filters such as Random or Recently Added, I get 4 failed connection attempts followed by "A network error occurred. Please check the server address or try again later." I am using custom port 4040, and I have specified the address as http://[myregistereddomainname]:4040. I have verified that I can reach that domain:4040 from the browser on my phone. I have rebooted the phone, uninstalled and reinstalled Subsonic on my PC, to no avail. When I hit the browse button, I can see the names of my top-level folders, but when I click on one of them I get the same 4 failed connection attempts and error message. I have tried this over both a wifi and 3G connection on my phone. The only folder that loads up is the one that contains 1 song. Many of my folders have many sub-folders (the entire library is ~1.3 TB), but I would expect that some of the smaller folders would load. I thought perhaps it was a memory issue, so I upped the allowed Java memory from 100 MB to 256 MB, but it didn't seem to help.

If you use the registered domain name you do not need to add the port number. Just use http://servername.subsonic.org. You can also test on the demo server or my server below.

Also: Go to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ enter your SS port number and click the Check box to be sure the Subsonic port is open.

Thanks, Gary. I am having this problem with both the custom MYNAME.subsonic.org and with my own hostname + port number. It's connecting to my server, but then it's timing out whenever I try to browse Random, Recently Added, or any folder that has more than a handful of tracks in it.

When I browse into a folder, does it then show all the sub-folders, or is it trying to list all tracks contained within that folder? I.e. I have a "Hi-Fi" folder (for FLAC files) and an "MP3" folder (for MP3s); each of those folders has several hundred sub-folders (for artist), then further sub-folders for album, then finally the actual files. I could understand that a timeout would happen if it's trying to list every file inside every sub-folder all at once, but my understanding was that it should only be showing me the sub-folders first, and only show tracks when I finally click into a lowest-level folder that actually directly contains the tracks.

And that still doesn't explain the timeouts on "Random" and "Recently Added," I don't think.

And I have verified that port 4040 is working properly on http://www.canyouseeme.org/

1.3TB is pretty big. Has the database been indexed yet?

You can force a manual index to run by going to Settings/Search and click on "Update dearch index now." That might help.

Setting up your library by X:\Folder\Artist\Album\tracks is the preferred method.

Also you may have to give the Subsonic service logon permissions to the NAS.

Instructions are in this Tutorial:

Also, if you have a license, click on the Donate button and enter the license key.

Yes, it's a big library, with a lot of folders. However, it was indexed successfully - at least it appears to be indexed. When I click on a folder in the web interface (using localhost) I am having the same problem, it says "connecting" (in the browser tab) but it never loads (10 minutes so far and waiting, clicked on a folder with 891 sub-folders).

In the subsonic interface, the stats make it appear as though the index was built successfully; I can see the following:

9,585 artists
7,057 albums
79,459 songs
1331.36 GB (~ 20,681 hours)

(which looks right to me, give or take a handful of files)

Thanks again for chiming in on my issue!

It's probably due to the file system on the NAS not playing well with Windows. I've seen others have similar issues before.

Thanks, Gary. Any idea what I could do to make this work? Windows is able to read the NAS OK - I've used it to build media libraries with Squeezebox, Media Monkey, foobar2000, and iTunes.

All I can seem to do with Subsonic is play the 1 song that's in its own folder with no other subfolders. Is there any way to increase the timeout limit for when it tries to load up a large number of items?
