I have added albums to my music folder but they are not showing up in my Subsonic list. I can do a subsonic search for the albums and artist and it finds it, but it still will not show up in the list. This happened to me before but cleared itself up after a couple days, it has now been a couple weeks and still not showing. I keep mine organized my artist---->album

2,391 albums
31,212 songs
367.05 GB (~ 5,701 hours)


I have done nothing differently than I have done before, just added my albums into a folder named as the artist, then dumped that in the music folder I have linked to subsonic....same as I always do. I have my search index updated daily, I have done it manually as well, restarted subsonic, rebooted computer, and even now updated to the 4.5.1 beta.

I have done that already, said that above...still won't find the 2 artists I added weeks ago.

pulling the folder out, and putting it back in fixes the issue, but not sure why it didn't read it the first time or any subsequent updating of the list.

Depending on your OS (or maybe not depending), you'll want to confirm your newly added directories had the appropriate permissions. Sometimes if I add a new album via an atypical method -- perhaps copying it over via a Samba share on a windows box, for example -- the owner and group settings are incorrect and subsonic doesn't have permissions to read the directory, which would result in it being skipped over. Doing a requisite 'chown' and 'chmod' resolves the issue.

It's possible that your issue got resolved by your putting the folder back in "the usual way", which you've likely ensured puts in the appropriate permissions. Tough to say for sure, but at least something for which to keep an eye out in the future...

It is strictly a windows network, my "server" has the subsonic running on it, and I have the music folders shared with my local network so I just drag and drop my music from my local main pc right into the shortcut on my desktop that coincides with the folder on my server that subsonic reads, same as I always do, and same as I did to fix it, dragged it out and when it was done transferring, dragged it back in and voila.....it saw it that time.....it really is no big deal seeing as it is an easy fix, just strange is all. And it may be something as you say, that some permissions get screwed up but I would think that the next time subsonic re scanned the folder, it would show up because it clearly is in there, and playable if I searched for it..

The Subsonic service must have log on permissions to any folder it wants to access where music is stored. By default the service is set as "Loacal System" account. If music is stored in a folder requireing specific user priveliges, than the log on for the service needs to be redefined with elevated privileges.

understood, but this happens in the folder that I have used for the last year since starting with subsonic, same computer, same login...nothing has changed. I know it's probably a fluke with my system or else others would be flagging it, and thats why i didn't label it as a bug. So like I said its not a biggie seeing as all I have to do is re add the folder whenever this happens, I was just curious as to why, it has maybe happened 4 times to me in the past year so so done deal thanks for all the suggestions as to why, I will keep an eye on it.

I'm having the same issue as baxtr above. I have an external HD that is solely my music drive. Artist folders are the top level, then down to Albums. I've created several Artist folders and several Album folders that never appear in Subsonic, no matter if I do "Update Search Index" or not.

Also like baxtr, I didn't do anything esoteric when creating and populating these folders, and others that I created the same day ARE showing up in Subsonic.

Any suggestions for how a relatively non-technical cat such as myself could identify folders that somehow have the wrong set of permissions (if that is what I'm dealing with here)?

Have you tried moving the folder that is not showing up out of your music folder, then moving it back in? that is what fixed my issue, just drag them out of your folder and then when they are done moving drag them right back in....see if that works

Yeah, I saw that that's the workaround you've come up with, and I'll give it a shot.

The only problem with that solution for me is that I tend to import albums to my media drive in bulk, only every few weeks, and am accustomed to them not showing up in Subsonic until the next scheduled Search Index Update (usually the next day). I then use the "Newest Albums" tab as a reminder of what I need to listen to, so if things don't show up there, I'll often forget that I have them.

I'd still be interested to learn how I could find out what permissions those folders have, and how I'd go about editing them.

So, the baxtr "drag and drop and drag again" workaround was marginally successful for me, but didn't seem like a scalable solution, so I did some more digging. I discovered Shane Monroe's invaluable "A Practical Guide to Installing and Configuring SubSonic" here: http://monroeworld.com/android/subsonic/ (which I can't believe I hadn't read before).

I'd already set up my rig (Win7) correctly according to this guide, EXCEPT for the "Permissions to remote folders" step about a third of the way in. I ran through that part to grant Subsonic Log On As A Service rights, then restarted my machine. Lo and behold, all of the folders that had previously been missing are now present and accounted for (as I suspected, there were many that I forgot I even had).

I didn't have time to add a new folder after having changed these settings, to see if this solves my problem going forward, and I'm still not sure why some folders showed up and some didn't in the first place, but I'll update this thread with my results when I do so.

One question for the board, though - Shane mentions that

many people will "condemn" the use of the administrator account for this purpose because it violates "good security practices". Once you have SubSonic actually WORKING, then you can go back and make designated user accounts and implement all those "good practices".

I'm not totally clear on what kind of designated user accounts he's talking about here (accounts in SS? Accounts in Windows?), or precisely what the security ramifications of this setup are. Can anyone enlighten me as to best practices from this point, or if they agree that this current setup is suboptimal from a security standpoint?
