Linking to files doesn't work...

I download a lot of movies from Vodo. When a new one comes out I'll have my server/seedbox download it for later.

If I want to watch it in Subsonic, I need to copy the video to my subsonic folder. I don't want Subsonic indexing or changing my entire downloads folder, nor do I want to download the torrent to the Subsonic folder. I can't move it either, because I want to seed to at least a ratio of 10 (which isn't hard with Vodo films).

Unfortunately, copying these videos can take a while and use up more disk space than it really needs to, so I figured I could create a symbolic link! That gave me an error message when trying to play it (subsonic recognized the link), so I created a hard link, which also gave me an error message. It was a cannot be accessed or wrong permissions error, but I double checked and the permissions aren't the problem. Any ideas on where I should start?

You can change the frequency that subsonic updates in settings -> search. That way you can just add your downloads folder using settings -> Music folder, and update indexes much less frequently or manually.

Why do you not want subsonic indexing the folder?
What is the error in the log file?

Organizational purposes! I want to arrange them in a certain folder hierarchy, but if I move or rename them the torrent is no longer in it's original configuration and can't be seeded. The torrent is usually the video plus a snippet of the video plus info on the video and the project. I'll take a look at the error log file...
