Opening a SS playlist in Winamp over SSL

Postby supra92 » Mon Aug 08, 2011 10:46 pm

This seems like such a straightforward thing that I feel I'm missing something blatantly obvious. Apologies in advance if so, but 20 mins of searching turned up lots of questions but no concrete answers. I never use external players, so have never had the need to utilise this particular functionality.

OS: Scientific Linux 5.5
SS: 4.5b2, Tomcat WAR

I've saved a playlist in SS and called it "bca.m3u" -- a friend of mine wants to play that from his WinAmp player. My understanding is that you supply a URL with the appropriate info. A forum search turned this up from Sindre, albeit back in 2007:

http://your.domain.com/subsonic/stream? ... uffix=.mp3

In my case, since I run mine on SSL, i used "https" instead of "http". Winamp says it's trying to connect, but nothing plays. So....

1. Is this even doable? If it is, how is security performed if there is no UN/PWD in the URL string? Does this mean anyone could simply hit up your SS if they happen to know that particular URL constructor along with various playlist names on the server?

2. Is this a limitation of SSL? I'm wondering if the only reason it's failing is because I'm trying to connect to https. Can confirm it does not work locally (ie, using the internal 192.168.1.x address) either. I'm not expecting to have to open any additional iptables/firewall ports for Winamp...

Thanks, and regards,

A while back I noticed some issues with the external player feature. Here's what's happening on my setup:

Chrome: Never works, selecting an External Player does nothing. Selecting either Video or Music results in blanking out the upper frame, almost as if it's trying to call the player as it's used for video when played in the browser.

IE 9: Works OK for music over http, using https results in the music being playes in the browser player. Video just plays in the browser no matter what player is selected when connected over https. Over http, it sends the play list to VLC (my external player) but it just shows in the playlist and it won't play. OOPS - belay that, while I was typing the video just started in VLC, it must download the whole video before playback begins, but it does work.

I haven't tested WMP for some time, but I do remember that it had problems as well.

I've noticed a similar issue. I always use the external player (Winamp) with playlist option for my player. Used to always pop up with an m3u which would open in Winamp. Nowadays in Chrome and Firefox when I try to play a playlist, the top frame blanks out and eventually FF informs me that my VLC flash plugin has crashed. However, when I do the same thing in Internet Explorer I get my m3u file as expected. Not sure what is happening but I thought I'd contribute the feedback.
