Success! Is anything but... Issues with ports

After much work, I finally got subsonic up and working, sporadically at least. That is, until this morning. When I try to access my subsonic server from my phone, it gives me the "couldn't understand reply" error message. When trying to access it from a Windows PC, either externally or internally, when I type in IP:PORT address, all it tells me is "Success!". Subsonic had been working fine until today, and now it gives me this. Also, the subsonic (now 4.5) server software gives me the error message "Address already in use. Please change port number". As I said, up until today everything was working fine. According to canyouseeme website, my chosen port is still viewable. What broke? I've read extensively through the oft-posted setup guides, and have set my router up correctly. Any help would be appreciated.

Bit of a shot in the dark, but is it possible you do have something else running on the same port? I'm visualising some kind of case where you're running the standalone jetty version on the same port as, say, apache http. 80, or 443, or 8080, etc. That will definitely introduce problems/conflicts, possibly of the nature you're describing.

Can you tell us what OS you're using for SS, whether it is the standalone jetty version or the WAR file, and on what port you're running it?

Perhaps you have another service running on that same port?

I didn't change anything, so don't have anything running on the same port, unless Windows started something without my knowing it, is there a way to check that the port is being used exclusively with SS?
I am running Win 7 Professional, and am using the standalone version downloaded from the subsonic page. I am running it on port 8092. I did have to call my internet provider to get them to open that port, which they did (with a bit of hesitation, I might add).

There is something running on port 80 already, and all I see is SUCCESS! on your chosen port. Reset SS to use 4040 and restart the service. Test 4040 on canyouseeme.org.

I know, that is my exact problem. Unfortunately, my ISP has blocked most of my ports, and right now 4040 is closed, so I'll have to call them tomorrow to get them to open it, and then report back. Out of curiousity, are there any certain ports or range of ports that work better with SS than others?

I use 809X for http and 45X for https. Others work fine. Why do you have to call your ISP, can't you just open the ports on your router or gateway device?

Even when I open the ports via port forwarding they don't appear to actually open, at least according to canyouseeme. I had to call my ISP and ask them to open 8092, and they said they did, and then afterwards when I checked canyouseeme reported it as open. Very strange.

Sounds like you have an ISP managed firewall AND a personal firewall device.

Next time you are on the phone with them, ask them how to access their firewall... they might tell you and then you can just DMZ your IP address and let your firewall handle blocking...
