Problem with Ogg playback, both local and streaming

Postby benzilla » Thu Sep 22, 2011 3:42 pm

Hi - I hope you folks might have some advice on how to solve this. I'm having trouble playing back some (but not all) of the Ogg music files in my library.

Here's some relevant info:

1 -This problem is not specific to Subsonic. The problematic files cause issues with playback on my Squeezbox player as well (but curiously, not with Winamp)

2 - The problem occurs only with Ogg encoded files--but it does not occur with ALL Ogg files

3 - I'm reasonably sure that all the problematic files were ripped generally at the same time and with the same software. I'm not 100% sure, but they were most likely ripped with Winamp circa 2002, using the then-current Ogg encoder from the Vorbis site.

4 - The problem occurs both when streaming through the Subsonic app and locally using the web interface.

Here's what happens when I try to play an album of such files with the Subsonic web interface:

http://screencast.com/t/Udt074crbnet

Here's ffmpeg output for the first file from that album:

C:\subsonic\transcode>ffmpeg -i "F:\Music\Ben\Buddy Holly\The Buddy Holly Collec
tion - Disc 1\01 - Buddy Holly - Down The Line.ogg"

:? Hmmm! So what IS the problem ? Does not play? skipping? I cant see any errors in log.
If it does not play check if you have any album art embedded in the tag, that can sometimes cause problems eg silence!!!

@BKKKPewsey - It just skips down the list not playing them. Every once in a while it'll play the first second or two of a song and then skip to the next one. Here's a video of it in action in the Subsonic web interface:

http://screencast.com/t/Udt074crbnet

Thanks for the suggestion about the album art. With the example folder/album I used here, there is not embedded album art in any of the files--there's just a folder.jpg. (And I have plenty of other Ogg-encoded albums with album art that all play fine.) I'm guessing that it's something with the file encoding itself. As mentioned, these same files give my Squeezebox player trouble as well. Interestingly, the Squeezebox player will actually play the file, but the song itself sounds really distorted--almost like it would if it were being played through a speaker with a blown cone.

Hmm! does seem odd I would expect to see some kind of error in the log :?
Can you try to pm me with one of the dodgy files as an attachment (smallest one & DONT ZIP IT)
Or if that dont work pm with a guest access to your server with download allowed and I can grab it direct or upload somewhere and send me the link.

@BKKKPewsey - That'd be great. Here, I'll just post one of the problem files publicly in case anyone else might want to take a stab at this:

As you can see from my sig box I did manage to get it to play in SS BUT only after I re-converted it from ogg to ogg using MediaMonkey (which played the original np).
So as you suspected there is something about the original encoding that ffmpeg/lame doesn't like.
Probably easiest solution is just re-encode them (if not too many :( )

@BKKKPewsey Thanks for checking that out. Interestingly someone PM'd me and downloaded the file, added it to their library, and got it to play fine in Subsonic. I think there are only a small handful of records in my collection that are having this problem, so I could probably just re-encode them but I'd really like to figure out what's going on--partly just 'cause it will bug me, and partly because I don't want to have to do a lossy-to-lossy re-encoding. (Maybe I could do Ogg to FLAC to get around that?)

Anyway, thanks again for the help. I'll keep digging...

Update:

I went ahead and updated Subsonic (and ffmpeg in the process). So, now I'm:

Version 4.5 (build 2385) – August 11, 2011
Server jetty-6.1.x, java 1.6.0_18, Windows 7 (60.6 MB / 93.4 MB)

With the new ffmpeg the behavior has changed somewhat: it's now actually crashing ffmpeg and throwing an error message as it tries to play each song.

Here's output the from Subsonic log:

Re: Problem with Ogg playback, both local and streaming

That was what was happening to me but I didn't find out to later after I RDPed into my server and received half a dozen "Do You want to report this to Microsoft" messages waiting for me :(
You could play these files using an external player via SS - just turn off the ogg transcoding for the player. This will keep ffmpeg out of the loop.

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

Thanks for all the help and ideas, folks. I monkeyed around with a few command line utilities that (supposedly) can check/repair oddly-encoded Ogg files, but given that there's only a small handful of albums in my collection that have this problem, I'm just going to convert the offending files to FLAC. It's going to bug me that I never could figure out what the problem was, but time-wise, this is probably the best solution.
