Error creating username

When i try to create a username under preferences it keep telling me that the username is already in use or the server is down.
I've tried with several names including sldkjglkhgjlghldfhg and i can't believe that there is any user with that name
Do i need to sign up to anything or pay for a username in order to create a username?
