SOLVED: Subsonic Won't Start Ubuntu Server 11.10

Problem Description: When I run the command

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/subsonic start

the command will output

Started Subsonic [PID 11840, /var/subsonic/subsonic_sh.log

however, nothing works, I cannot open the web interface (I get a could not connect error), and if I send

sudo /etc/init.d/subsonic stop

to the server I get

Code: Select all

start-stop-daemon: warning: failed to kill 11840: No such process

Troubleshooting Steps: I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling openjdk-6-jre and subsonic both twice. When I run a port scan on the server port 4040 is not open.
Playback Application and version: None, I haven't gotten to that stage yet.
Subsonic Version: 4.6 (the latest version as of 7th December 2011)
Server Version: Can't access about screen but I am running Ubuntu Server 11.10 with Apache version 2.2.20 (from Webmin) and I can't find the java version, when I try

java -version

I get

The program 'java' can be found in the following packages:
* gcj-4.4-jre-headless
* gcj-4.6-jre-headless
* openjdk-6-jre-headless
* gcj-4.5-jre-headless
* openjdk-7-jre-headless
Try: apt-get install <selected package>


but openjdk-6-jre-headless is definitely installed.
Hardware Platform: Ubuntu Server 11.10 on a box with a 2.8GHz P4 and 1GB of RAM.
Java Memory Limit: Unknown
Output from ffmpeg -i:

The program 'ffmpeg' is currently not installed.  You can install it by typing:
apt-get install ffmpeg

I have edited the thread title which might help.
I think the problem is that java is not being installed correctly but you will have to wait for a Ubuntu user for further help.

Oh thanks, well I guess I'll keep trying while I wait

Oooh I fixed it. I had to install openjdk-7-jre-headless instead of openjdk-6-jre like it said in the instructions.

I have the exact same symptoms as the OP. It started today, which seems to coincide with my last software update. But oddly, I don't think I updated anything related to java. I've attached my update history from synaptic, if that's helpful.

For several months, I've had sun-java6-jdk installed with no error. Does anyone know what this could be?

Well I just updated to subsonic 4.6 and the problem is solved.
