UNC paths windows-linux

Hi Subsonians,

I've been using subsonic on windows for a number of years now and love it to bits. I'm now dipping my toe in Linux waters with Ubuntu 11.10 and so far so good. I've managed to get subsonic up and running on that. The one thing which eludes me is how to add a network shared folder on a windows machine into the settings on the linux subsonic box.
Do i have to mount stuff, or is just the path syntax I got wrong - I *think* I tried all variants.

Oh and please speak noob talk if you have my answer :)

thanks, Lozzy

Look in to this first to get your windws shares set up in your Ubuntu box
http://www.tuxgarage.com/2011/01/how-to-mount-windows-shares-permanently.html
The reason you need to make a permanent mount in Ubuntu is that if you reboot your box it will lose the share every time.

Then Set up the folder in SS as normal, just follow the correct path to the Win-share.
EX. z://win7\home\my music

good luck

I'm nearly there. Got as far as permanent shares mounting, so happy about that.
I got confused slightly by your path to the share as above though. Seemed like that was a mixture of windoze and linux syntax? What worked for me was simply /mnt/e_audio/mp3 as the path (having setup e_audio as the permanent mounted share from the windows box).

One last problem though, is the inability to update my tags due to permissions, which I though I had covered using:
//10.0.0.1/E_AUDIO /mnt/e_audio cifs credentials=/home/lozzy/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,rw 0 0

not sure where to go from here... and thanks for the help

Sorry i took so long to answer, got carried away with the holidays, you are right i did give you a mix of WInux syntax :oops: lol...your path is correct do.

On Win machine: Make sure that you do not have a check mark in the read only section of the shared folder in the guest settings, make sure you have read and write for the guest account.
IF your not using the guest account in windows and you have a username/Pwd to log in then this makes your share password protected by the user account on win7. Then you will need to modify your .smbcredentials file.
This will allow Ubuntu to mount the share with log in credentials allowing you to R/W to the directory in your win machine. If you do't create that file you wont be able to log in.

For more help see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently

Good luck.

I had created that file, with username and password in, hence I didn't understand the read-only status for subsonic.

However, all solved with the following line:
    //10.0.0.1/e_audio /home/lozzy/Shares/LOZ/e_audio cifs credentials=/home/lozzy/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

and thanks a lot for the help :wink:
