Changed internet companies...cant map port? [Solved]

Postby pattirules » Sun Jan 01, 2012 6:19 am

Problem Description: I recently changed internet providers. the new one (comcast/infinity) uses 2 routers , one is where the wire goes to, the other runs off that and is for wireless.
i have no problem mapping a port usually, but i never did it for 2 routers running off one another.
Troubleshooting Steps:i read somewhere that i had to change my ip to static, is that correct?

Subsonic Version: running subsonic 4.5

I think you don't have 2 routers but a cable-modem and a WLAN-Router. Better tell us the model names.
If want your subsonic to be reachable from outside you have to set up your router and map port 80 or any other port you use for subsonic to the IP of your pc. To do this, your pc needs a static IP or alt least a fix dhcp-ip. There is nothing to set up in the cable-modem - just leave it alone.

You probably have it set up in bridge mode. The modem does not route but instead sends everything to the router which takes care of routing, nat, and wireless. Try to configure your router as if nothing else was connected to it.

It may not work. It might not be in bridging mode, but if it is, you don't have to worry about the other device.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, Image but some abuse the privilege!

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

Your not being stupid at all! The manual does not specify anything about port mapping. I do have a suggestion though.

My guess is that since you tried to port forward through the netgear and it did not work, the modem is probably not in bridge mode.

Log into your netgear router. There should be a page called "basic settings."
Is "Does your internet connection require a login" yes or no?
Is "Internet IP Address" Dynamic or static?

:P I hope you were not expecting me to read it :?

But you do now know how to screw it onto the wall :D (Probably good idea - may stop you from throwing it out of window)

You changed it to static? Try changing it back. Unless you pay for a static IP, it probably won't work the next time your ISP decides to lease you a new address.

Now you should clear the mappings, and start over. map it the way you did before, and check to see if it works.
As far as I can tell, you should be receiving an IP address via DHCP from your ISP.

Try using your public IP address to access Subsonic instead of your subsonic.org address.

Let me know if anything changed.

Don't worry about the arris. Open a port in your netgear router, and try it out. The arris is bridging the connection.
