I'm a newbie and have gone for web hosted option. Currently uploading 64GB via 100mb ethernet and lynksis router. My pc is Ubuntu 11.10 64bit 4MB memory.
Broadband line around 8MB.
Filezilla upload running at 80KB!
Using smartphone for this as chrome won't load on pc.
All help welcome, especially non-techie.

What exactly is the problem?

I think the upload speed of 80KB is very slow. It is also creating a bottleneck for other data such as web browsing. I was hoping for a fix to free up bandwidth/dataflow to more usual broadband speeds.

Pause the upload, and head over to
http://speedtest.net and post the results. Chances are that your upload bandwidth isn't all that much. Sorry.

thanks.
I get 0.13Mb download and 0.35Mb upload, which was your suspicion.
However speedtest think my server is 200 miles away and that I am also 200 miles away from where I am.
Is this usual (i can understand the ISP being distant)?

I am not sure how those IP address location maps work.
According to my IP map I have moved from Basingstoke to the north of Manchester
Hmm! as I live not far from your location (a few miles west) I find it most confusing.

Agreed.
Anyway I have started my uploading again. I was expecting a week of it but it may take nearer a month
I'm happy for any more ideas from anyone but understand this may be the end of the discussion.

A month? Wow. That is a very long time. If I were you, I would find a friend with high speeds, and ask kindly if I could upload for a little bit. In return, you could give this generous person a user account to your server

...or stop using your phone to try to upload. Find a PC that you can run Chrome on (or build one in a VirtualBox) and upload from there.

Wait a minute... You said you were using a 100mb connection to your router. I didn't realize you were using your smartphone. The smartphone is probably what is causing the bottleneck. Are you sure you're using wifi not 3g?
