Video transcoding quality/ratio messed up since version 4.6?

PostPosted: Tue Feb 21, 2012 1:12 pm

I'm on Ubuntu 11.10, and I've upgraded from version 4.4 to 4.6...
But now a lot of my video's, which played fine before, are now playing in low quality (video and audio), and some also use the wrong ratio (4:3 instead of 16:9)...

I haven't changed any transcoding settings...
Could some-one please help me?

Edit: My CPU load is also not normal anymore, even after a reboot, if I play a couple videós, and after that no-one is playing any video's... the server keeps using all its CPU resources.... I hope this issue can be fixed soon? :S

I cannot help because I do not use your OS :(
But if you post your SS log output while a "dodgy" video is playing it might help others to see the problem.
Can you determine what task/service is "hogging" your cpu resources?

Here i's my log... the last video is one of the vids that played perfectly on ver4.4, but is in low quality and wrong ratio now...
The CPU issue might be something different... let's see if we can fix the main issue first...

I've been doing a lot of testing recently and have a few conclusions that might help you out.

Video seems to run best when you download the latest build of ffmpeg for your OS and replace the ffmpeg.exe in the transcode subdirectory. The newer releases of ffmpeg seem to do a much better job of utilizing multi-core CPU's.

Audio, on the other hand is a different story if you use mp3 >ogg for mobile. I haven't been able to get that working properly since version 4.4. Taking the ffmpeg.exe from the 4.4 build and dropping it into one of my SS sites running ver. 4.5 enabled me to do the mp3 > ogg thing again.

But if you are only concerned with improving video performance and don't need to transcode to ogg, then go to the ffmpeg site and grab the latest version for your OS and do the update.

Then try rolling back the ffmpeg version to either the original SS distribution or the version that came with the SS version that worked previously.

Different versions of ffmpeg have very different capabilities.
