External Player starts iTunes instead of VLC

Hello,
I'm trying to play vob files with Subsonic. When I play the vob file, iTunes opens and attempts to play it. I have associated .vob with VLC so that's not the issue. Here is my configuration:

Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Subsonic 4.6 (build 2585) – December 6, 2011
VLC Version 2.0.1 Twoflower (Intel 64bit)

.vob files were associated by selecting the file, choosing Get Info, and setting VLC as the file to use when opening.

My Subsonic player is set to External player with playlist. The Type is set to iTunes/10.6 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6.8) AppleWebKit/534.54.16. I don't know how this gets set to this, but it seems to do it on its own. It initially started out as Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_6_8) AppleWebKit/535.11 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/17.0.963.79 Safari/535.11.

I have created a vob -> flv transcoder that is activated in the player page. The transcoder is set as follows:
Name: vob/flv
Convert from: vob
Convert to: flv
Step 1: ffmpeg -ss %o -i %s -b %bk -s %wx%h -ar 44100 -ac 2 -v 0 -f flv -

Except for the Type, which is set to iTunes, I think I've done everything most posters say to do on the forum.

So please help me with these questions:
1) Why does Type continually get set to iTunes instead of VLC? I say continually because I can delete the player and recreate it. It will eventually get set back to iTunes.

2) How do I control how Type is set?

Thanks,
Lem

You need to associate VLC with .pls play lists, not .vob files. The external playlist function activates an external app by pushing a playlist to it. Then that application reads that playlist and plays the specific content.

Glenn,
So it's all about creating a playlist first. I never made the the connection. I will give this a try and respond to how it goes. I appreciate your response.

Not a playlist in the subsonic sense...

When you use an external player, subsonic creates a playlist for that external player to access to know how to play the media... it is either a single stream location which subsonic is "broadcasting" or a series of links, one for each song.

But by using the external player, subsonic then returns a PLS playlist file reference back to the broswer, which then uses whatever the OS is set to open PLS files with to open the file and play the stream...
