Can't get proper router assigned IP address!

Postby TweakEn » Mon Apr 09, 2012 10:25 pm

I've been using Subsonic for a year now, and I've never had this problem and I don't know where to begin to fix it, but as soon as I tried to install an IP Cam to my router this happened.

When I go to 'johnzamp.subsonic.org' it goes to the ip address 169.254.107.122:8080 now (it never used to). Now, my router IP is 192.168.1.1, and my previous address for subsonic was 192.168.1.106:8080. My Internet IP address is 67.248.190.243. WHERE THE HELL IS 169.254.107.122:8080 coming from?!?! my 'johnzamp.subsonic.org also no longer registers when I go to settings in subsonic either. Should I just toss my router and get a new one, cuz I think that's the only explanation for what's going on here. I reset my router several times, I even did a system restore....nothing.

The 169.254.*.* address is a Link-local address. I'm resolving johnzamp.subsonic.org to 66.49.215.227. No idea specifically how you're having your problem, but my best guess is that it lies within the router.

(Assuming Windows since OS was not specificed) Try opening a command prompt (Start -> run -> cmd.exe) and running nslookup johnzamp.subsonic.org. Is the 169.254.*.* address returned?

The 169.254.x.x IP address is assigned automatically when a computer cannot get a DHCP address. These pesky addresses are assigned by APIPA, or Automatic Private IP Addressing. APIPA is useful when a DHCP server goes down, and a device can't get an IP address. This enables communication (on the LAN) between devices that were assigned APIPA addresses.

Let's try to troubleshoot this together:

What is the IP address of your IP camera?
Approximately how many devices are on your network?
Try to get a list of the DHCP assigned addresses from your router. It should be somewhere in the "Status" area.

Also, can you access your server by typing in the full IP address? In other words, can you ping 192.168.1.106?

By the way, as long as you're getting the ever-annoying APIPA address, subsonic name registration probably won't work. That's expected.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

when I run nslookup I get:

Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.1.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: johnzamp.subsonic.org
Address: 66.49.215.227

The 169.254.107.122 is a 'preferred' Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. I tried to look into disabling this IPv4 address, but it involves modifying a registry file, which I don't want to do, especially since of the 4 registry files it could be, I'm not sure which one it is.

I don't know what the IP address of my camera is, I disconnected it and have been working to just get my subsonic server back up and running. On my network I have my desktop computer (hardwired), my wife's laptop (wireless), my internet phone (hardwired), and occasionally I have my phone and my wife's phone connected wirelessly.

Here is my DHCP assigned addresses from my router:

SipuraSPA LAN 192.168.1.101 00:0E:08:2A:0B:34
android_d491eb372cc092c2 Wireless-G 192.168.1.102 44:A7:CF:E1:B6:6D
android-b0fb069d8476ae6 Wireless 192.168.1.104 2C:44:01:C9:A6:15
(Blank) Wireless 192.168.1.105 00:1F:5B:B6:6B:3B
Also my computer is at 192.168.1.100, I dunno why it's not listed there

I assume SipuraSPA is my internet phone
The 2 androids are our phones
...and The blank is my wife's computer

...also I have port forwarding set up for port 8080
I can also connect to my subsonic server by going to 192.168.1.100:8080
But when I go to johnzamp.subsonic.org it changes the IP to that 169.254.107.122:8080 address

I have no idea what's going on

With the camera disconnected have you forced an update of your subsonic.org address -settings/network -save?

It sounds like the problem isn't with the DHCP server at this point. You're able to access the server by its address, 192.168.1.100:8080.

At this point it sounds like a DNS registration issue.

It's gotta be the router. It keeps trying to go to that address even before I set up subsonic. I'm just gonna get a new router, tired of this BS. Linksys fail again. I've had 3 Linksys routers now, first one had multiple ports die on it, second died completely, and now this crap is going on with the third. I love that stuff, I change nothing, and all of a sudden things stop working. Gonna try Netgear I guess.

Most routers (especially wireless) have about a two year shelf life before the heat start to break down the chips and cause errors. They all run too hot and have poor ventilation. The best one out there for longevity ironically is the good old lynksys WRT54G. The only problem is that it's just wireless g. I've got a Netgear WND 3700 that's been fine so far. It's about two years old so who knows how long before it goes belly up?

I've owned quite a few over the last 30 years and have come to the conclusion that it's pretty much a crap shoot when trying to pik a good one. You may have great luck with a certain model and then go online and find people who have had nothing but problems with the same model.

I installed a new Amped wireless 600 mw extended range router http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833281012
in a law office because they weren't getting a very good signal at the far end of the building.
It replaced a WRT54G. Guess what? Same signal power!!! No improvement.

Roll the dice and don't overspend.

Or you could go for a Cisco enterprise router like the 2600s. I have six! Well, I'm working on my CCNA, but they have fans so they can run for years without a hitch! :P

Got a new router....stupidly went with Linksys again. Same crap. Wants to connect to the same IP address as before. I friggin hate computers! I'll just have my friend come over and do the same exact thing I did and it will work.

K, so I reformatted my computer and now it works. Except that it won't let me use johnzamp.subsonic.org anymore. I can put a 1 on the end and it works lol. Why do computers mock me?

Yea. They're EoL, but that's why you can get them for less than $3,000 on eBay! Honestly, they don't perform very well by today's standards, and I wouldn't use them for a home internet connection; a new Linksys could out-perform an old 2600. I have them set up so that I can practice configuring the routers and learn new concepts with real equipment. Although I am starting to need a rack. I have eight, soon to be ten devices stacked without a rack!
