Subsonic Forum

i apologize if this is a topic already in the forum, but i did try to search it and no one seems to have the issue i'm having.

background info: i've had subsonic for over a year now and i love it. it worked perfectly for me. i donated so i could have my own url. i turn my server off every so often because my dad runs a company out of our house and the credit card company denied him to be able to run credit cards because they saw subsonic as a threat to the home network, not sure why exactly but i guess it makes sense. but anyway, i turn off my server when i know there is going to be a test to the network by the credit card company so my dad passes and then turn it back on when he gives me the ok.
now the issue:... i turned my subsonic network off 2 weeks ago for the check and a week later when i went to turn it back on it doesn't seem to want to start. so i restarted my computer and tried again, subsonic still didn't want to start up. so i tried uninstalling subsonic and re-installing it, and then restarting my computer again. subsonic still didn't want to start. the icon doesn't seem to want to show up in my notification section of my task bar no matter what i do. when i click the "open subsonic" icon in program files through the start bar, it gives me a missing short cut window. "windows is searching for subsonic.url. to locate the file yourself, click browse... ". when i click "subsonic agent" going through my computer program files nothing seems to happen. Clicking "start service" a command window does pop up very very briefly, and it's completely black, in other words i don't see text running. local host website does not work through all of this.

please help me get subsonic working again. i love it the program and use it all the time and am rather sad that i haven't been able to use it lately ,

Could you confirm what OS you are trying to run subsonic on - I assume windows

oh, right, i guess i should have mentioned i'm on windows xp.

Check what version of java you have installed - you may have had an update whilst SS was not running.

open a command prompt and type

Code: Select all

java -version[rtn]

that's crazy. i would have never thought to update java.... but i guess that was in fact the problem... i re-installed java, clicked the subsonic tray icon, and the icon actually showed up.. YAY!!!

i don't know things sometimes, haha, but now i know for a little more for next time

also, while i have your attention, i was also wondering if you could help me with one more thing that has been boggling in my head, if you can that is.
i registered my own personal address for subsonic. it worked for a while but my dad got a new router a while back and ever since i haven't gotten it to work right. the website comes up normal when i go to my servers local ip address and my servers internet ip address... but if i type in my personal link, subsonic doesn't load up. just comes up with "could not connect to ip address". but the ip address it's trying to connect to isn't right. ... lets say my local ip ends with 37.... the address it loads ends with 7...
however, here's the weird part that confuses me... if i use subsonic on my phone through the app... my personal address works fine... i don't have to type in my servers ip at all

i thought maybe there was something on the router that is blocking it, but if it works on my phone, why doesn't it work on the same internet if i use a computer?

any thoughts?

First thing to try is go to settings/network and hit save.
This will force an update of your subsonic.org address.

did that. i got "Status: XXXXX.subsonic.org responded successfully. " and just to make sure i checked my port forwarding too "Status: Successfully forwarding port 80."
link still doesn't work on computer, but does work on my phone.

Try using another port for SS - 80 is the standard internet port and something else on the pc may be trying to use it as well.
Change the port via control panel but you may also need to open the port in the router.
Any no. will do eg 8080
Use http://canyouseeme.org to check if you have been successful.
Then hit the save again to update your subsonic.org address.

well i opened port 8080 on my router and tested the connection with that site you gave me. it's open... i changed the port to 8080 in the subsonic control panel, ended the program and re-started it. went to the local host and hit save in the network settings. it says port 8080 is successful and that my address is registered but can't connect. so now my local ip, global ip, and the personal address don't work at all. i tested my phone, and that can't connect either.

so i changed it all back to port 80. and my phone works again. same with local ip and global ip. personal link still doesn't work but now i have a different message in the network settings area... "Status: XXXXX.subsonic.org responded successfully, but could not authenticate it. " what does that mean?

OK I checked and I can see your site np from my end so I am not sure what going on your end
And I didn't laugh too much with regard to your personal subsonic.org address - at least its fairly guaranteed to be unique

ok, well then maybe it's just me... just sent the link to my boyfriend to see if he can see it, i guess he is able to see it too.... weird. so why does the link work on global but not local?? as far as i remember it use to work local a while back, was there an update that changed that?

oh well, at least i know it works for when i'm out and about and want my music... otherwise if i'm at home on another computer i will know to just us my ip address instead.
