Subsonic stalls after login

Hi all,

I have recently installed Subsonic and tested it with about 20 CDs with no particuliar problem
After this test, I've pointed Subsonic at my real library and everything seemed ok: I could login remotely, browse the libraries etc

I left Subsonic running overnight and when trying to login the next day, Subsonic stalls after the login page
I can't see any specific disc activity, the CPU is not melting..

My library is about 270.000 titles (21.000 CDs) and is organised as follows:

x:\mp3\genre\artist - year - album title\track nr - title.mp3

I have 5 different "genre" directories
The largest genre holds about 13.000 CDs / 160.000 titles
Every mp3 is properly tagged (artist, title, year, genre...)

I understand that this organisation does not correspond to the recommendation, but I don't feel like reorganising the whole stuff just to see if it works...

Any clue about what's wrong ??

Thanks!

Subsonic 4.6 on Asus N75S
Windows 7 - Intel Corei7 - 8Gb RAM - plenty of disc space

With a large library such as that I would certainly make sure that your java memory allocation is a suitable size.
I would suggest 512Mb for that size of media library.

If you're doing a first install of SS, I'd recommend going right to the 4.7beta1 with a collection this large. the new db structure is much improved and doesn't require the java memory allocation needed on previous versions.

Thanks for the hint, but... how/where do I specify the mem allocation ??

Right click on the tray icon. Settings tab on the control panel.

I guess I should have found this by myself :?
Anyhow, this did the job, thanks again for the hint

I have also tried the 4.7beta1(but didn't change the mem allocation) and I did not like it.
On 4.6, on the left panel (where your albums are listed), I can see the artist, year and part of the album title (right part is truncated but "guessable")
4.7 only shows the album title --> I prefer half the album title than no artist/year

All I need to do now is to find how to use the search function without reorganising all the subdirectories...

BTW: I LOVE your occupation !!

Thanks, me too.

Surprised a bit that you didn't like 4.7. I find it to be a big improvement and I will be changing all my instances over to 4.7 in the near future. I do have a very simple file structure which may make it easier than a collection that has a more sophisticated organization.

Send me a PM if you'd like a look at 4.7 on my site.

Well, honestly, I just looked at it for a few minutes, I did not look at every new/changed detail
The fact that I'm loosing information is not quite an option

Can you tell me what your directories/files organisation is ?

Thanks

I will butt in here and add some extra info on how SS gets its Artist\Album info.

To cater for those users who do not have their ID tags sorted correctly (and believe me there are lots of them)
SS uses a novel approach by using the folder names.
It will scan the media folders until it finds playable media then steps back one and uses the folder name to derive the album name.
It then drops back one more folder and uses that name to derive the Artist name.
So if you have your directory structure set up as genre\Artist\Album\tracks then all is good as far as SS is concerned.
I have my directories set up as ..\Alphabet letter\Artist\Year - Album\track# - Artist -Title.ext
eg ..\A\Argent\1974 - Nexus\ tracks
Note also that SS ignores the year in the folder name within search so if I search for "nexus"
it will bring back Nexus as an album name.
The song info (Title) is derived from the ID3 tag as per normal.

This is how SS works up to now but the forthcoming 4.7 appears to be using more ID3 tag info but I am awaiting the official release

That is one advantage I have is that I always have had my library organized by the recommended X:\Music\Artist\Album\Tracks setup and All the tags in the music mirrors the information in the file structure.

I realize that this doesn't work for everybody, but with the ability to generate a playlist on the "More" screen and specify the year, this structure and Subsonic's overall structure does everything I need it to do.

I hope that's helpful. I just got home and PM'd you the logon info. Feel free to roam around and see if this helps you at all. The search features in 4.7 are much faster. I also use SS for video and 4.7 seems to be handling video and mp3 > ogg for use on my Android much better than previous versions,

Gary,

I have realized that changing my directory structure if not quite my favorite option: too much work
I will probably try 4.7 when it will be released (I hate betas...) but I'm not sure to keep it al all if the search does not work

Anyhow, thanks a lot for your time!

Not a problem. There's a raging discussion on this very issue right now in the 4.7 Announcement thread in the Announcements forum. It's beginning to look like the developer may have to implement an option to use the taga OR the folders to do the sorting to address the problem.

That's what betas are for, so let's see what happens.
