Encoding Woes

Hi guys,
Trying to iron out a few glitches in an otherwise eargasmic musical experience with our new Subsonic server.
We are running into a problem with character encoding. Songs with accented characters (common in french, spanish, portuguese, etc) are not recognized by Subsonic.
Directories named with accented characters do not show up at all, files named with accented characters are unplayable - I can see the file name, with the accents replaced by a question-mark-in-a-diamond character (For example 01- So So paulo), but the tag information is not displayed and the accent-title files are out of sequence. Songs with accents wont play, load into a playlist or download.
The file names and tags themselves are fine. They display fine in windows winamp via VPN or FTP.
Is this a common problem? I see that some people are dealing with similar issues, but surely there must be a way to get these files to play, no?
I still dont have shell access to the linux server running Subsonic yet, as it belongs to a friend. Is there a fix for this, or documentation that explains configuring the character encoding that I can point my friend to? At the moment a large portion of our music is unplayable.
Subsonic 3.2
build October 9, 2007
Apache Tomcat/5.5.25 (63.5 MB / 63.6 MB)
thanks in advance!
