Missing Track Numbers

Postby BrentonMcGhee » Thu Jun 21, 2012 12:26 am

I have a strange problem that i have been investigating for a while now but i have finally given in and hopefully you guys can help.

I have a small list of albums that the track numbers simply do not show up on the subsonic web interface, the other 99% of my albums show the track numbers properly.

There is zero difference in the way the problem albums are stored than the working albums,
ID3 tag info is there
file name structure is the same
directory structure is the same
I have wiped all tag info and re added it manually
i have wiped the subsonic database and started from scratch
windows file properties correctly show the track number
windows media player, winamp, and mediamonkey all show the track numbers for these albums as well

Nothing seems to make these few select albums display their track numbers in subsonic,

IDEAS?

Be careful with media players as they do not show ALL the tag info. For instance MM has a problem if the track data is x/y
eg 1/12, 2,12 etc MM will display that as 1, 2 ...
I know tracks numbers in that format can cause an issue with SS (ffmpeg).
I would suggest you use something like mp3tag to investigate those problem tracks as that will also pick up (sometimes) corrupted ID3 tags.

Also check if the files happen to have both ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags that differ. That happens sometimes and the behavior is not consistent among music players.

These are great suggestions, thanks guys. I will load up MP3Tag and see if it can spot any difference on the few albums that have missing track info.

FYI, MM is what i use to rip, organize, manage and store all of my music, so i would have thought that if there was a problem it would be with all albums not just a few, who knows maybe just those few MM messed up when editing the tags.

If you used MM to rip that wouldn't be the problem.
It's when you acquire cough!! files from other sources that you can get into problems.

FYI I find MM has a problem with any tags imported into the MM database that has tracks x/yy format.
I find that MM keeps showing those files as having non-synchronised tags - change them to normal x or xx and its all ok
But you have to do that in mp3tag as MM will not clean out the /yy part.

Still no luck,

I loaded up MP3Tag and did not spot any differences in the tags between the few albums that have missing track info and all the rest. I even went ahead and changed the track numbers with mp3tag and changed them back to maybe overwrite the possible bad values and still no go.

All of the albums in subsonic were ripped from actual cd's using MM so they should all be identical in the tag structure. I am at a complete loss. I have even completely deleted those few albums and re ripped them from scratch and still no go.

What happens if you change the track numbers with SS?

So i found where i can edit track tags from within in SubSonic (i was stupid because it was right infront of my face) but still no luck. When i put in a track number and hit save i get the following error

Failed to update tags for file J:\Music\MP3\Foo Fighters\Wasting Light [2CD Deluxe Edition] [Disc 01]\01. Bridge Burning.mp3. For input string: "88697844932"

Sounds to me that something is not quite right there :?
Use mp3tag and clear the track no's - hit save then use the auto numbering wizard in mp3tag to rewrite them.
Also check that mp3tag is not showing bad tags and you haven't got APE tags defined -that can really confuse things.

Wow, i have absolutely no idea what to do now, here is what i did.

Completely uninstalled SubSonic using RevoUninstaller to make sure there were no left over pieces anywhere. (The idea behind this was to start from scratch with a new database and not have anything from the old one)
Used MP3Tag to delete the track numbers from the 3 albums in question
Used MP3Tags auto numbering feature to reassign fresh track numbers
Re installed SubSonic
Re added all my media folders and had it do a re scan

Track numbers are still missing from the same 3 albums. These three albums show track numbers when being pulled up in all of the following
MediaMonkey
Windows Media Player
Winamp
Itunes
My Blackberry
My iPhone

Could you upload somewhere one of those problem files and pm me a link (Suggest the smallest one :) )
I am sure there is simple explanation but what it is I have no idea

Here yha go, this is the smallest file from all three albums (3.0MB) track 4 of a Fuel CD. I am very curious to see if you or others have the same problem with this track. It is compressed as a .7z file so you will need 7zip to open it, i tried to make it as small as possible.

Just as a reminder, all of my tracks were created in the exact same manner (ripped from a cd using the same settings in MM, they were actually all ripped in relatively the same period of time) this makes this problem even more confusing to me. I did not get some tracks from cd's some from itunes, some from p2p networks, some from friends, etc.......

Delete the large number you have in Disk Number Field - I think that is confusing SS
You usually only use that to indicate a particular disk of a set eg double cd or box set

I'm having this same issue too. In my case, I have a a large library that I've been managing in iTunes over many years. I try to fill in the "Total Tracks" and "Total Discs" fields for every file. So, track 7 of an album that has 13 tracks will have a track number of "7/13" or "7 of 13" in media players that support it. Otherwise, most players just show a track number of "7".

Oddly, this doesn't seem to happen for every track. However, if I set the track number and/or disc number in winamp (without the "Total" value), this seems to cause the track number to reappear in Subsonic.

Is there some sort of a bug here that needs to be reported? Is it possible that the "Total Tracks" and "Total Discs" fields aren't part of the id3v2 standard? If not, what's the possibility of getting Subsonic to support them?

I've found iTunes to be the best way for me to manage my tagging. I'd love to continue using it, if possible.
