I recently attempted to update my jw-player to the new 5.10. I was following the simple method viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5977&start=15
I have reverted back to the older 5.6 and still seem to have the problem. Ironically enough I did not really see any improvement with 5.10. It actually lagged a bit (though I am sure that is due to ffmpeg trying to kill the cpu) Watching any video shoots my cpu to 80%-100%. There is nothing of any use (or anything at all for that matter) in my log. I tried un-installing and re-installing subsonic with no effect. I have 2500k at 4.5ghz so my hardware is not the problem for sure. I am completely coding illiterate, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Knowing what OS SS is running on and the video file types (avi, m4v, etc) would help.

Sorry about that. Windows 7 64bit, 256mb java, ss 4.6, jetty 6.1.x java 1.7.0_05. It seems to be all video sources I have tried. More specifically .mkv and avi. I was remoting with my phone a moment ago though, and while there were spikes there wasn't a constant large load. This may be due to me being remotely connected though. ( I am at work right now) With any luck it solved itself. I wont know for sure until I get home later today though. After re-installing I let it run the manual indexing. It didn't finish until after I was asleep, perhaps that has something to do with it?

Seems to have resolved itself. Usually I would want to dig further, but I'm alright with not having to fix this lol. Out of curiosity though, shouldn't the new jwplayer 5.10 have been a bit better, instead of worse? Ah well, if it works I suppose ill avoid trying to fix it.

To eliminate any other possible problems try playing make a flv file - see if you still see a large spike in cpu usage.
Also check that all the cores are about the same (making assumption it is a multi-core processor)

I have the same/similar problem. I have a AMD Quad running W7-64 and all 4 processors are maxed out even with no one listening to Subsonic. I have about 15 ffmpeg processes running and they switch between them for max cpu.

I and my wife are mostly the only ones using it and then only MP3 files. I have tried shutting down SS and these processes go away. The I restart and they start popping up again without anybody listening to SS.

So far, I have had to permanently reduce the processes priority permanently to below normal just to get anything done. SS complains about this when I start it back up and want to change its priority back to normal, but I can't allow it.

I had not noticed this problem before. But I did try a video once just to see how well SS worked with them. However, I still only listen to audio, and most of them are teaching, not music.

It is getting worrisome to see all 4 core processors maxed out all the time even when not in use. I understand that this is not good for the processor either. Even though I have adequate cooling, hi temps even within the normal range can't be good.

Bottom line, this is not the way it's supposed to work.

knowing your processor specs only gives us a small bit of info

I am not exactly computer literate in regards to the different java processes and such. Perhaps I could send a Belarc advisor printout? I don't play video files as in the post previous to mine, in fact it does it without anybody playing anything. I'm not exactly sure of what you are refering to. Thanks for your response. Just let me know what I need to tell you.

Most issues like this are usually traced back to the ffmpeg build. I've written a lot of information regarding video playback with Subsonic and all the variables involved. For my own purposes, I've tested several versions of ffmpeg and have my personal favorite that I think works best on my Windows platforms. YMMV, but in general you should get better results and behavior by using more recent ffmpeg builds than the one that comes as part of the standard package in the Subsonic installer.

You can download the latest build for your platform from the link above and just replace the ffmpeg.exe into the Subsonic transcode subdirectory.

Something happened overnight. I am the only one who has used Subsonic since yesterday listening only to mp3 files and the CPU usage has returned to normal, less than 10% and I have done nothing to affect this.

I have about 20 ffmpeg processes running and they are all behaving nicely.

If I understand it, ffmpeg is used only for transcoding video files. I haven't watched any video files since the last reboot. I don't understand why there are so many ffmpeg processes

PS I did download the latest ffmpeg anyway, shut down the SS server, replaced the original file, restarted the SS server and it is still running nicely although there are once again about 20 processes.

There are some behaviors with video files and ffmpeg that are not obvious. I can't recall the exact explanation, but I do know that it has been explained elsewhere in the forum.

Apparently, as best I can recall, there are some background processes that ffmpeg does to prescan the video files if they are present. I don't recall the exact reason for this but I do know that it does consume resources until the scan is complete.
