custom subsonic.org address wrong IP

I have donated and been using the subsonic server for a while now. I have also setup my username.subsonic.org address which has been working for a while. It no longer connects and when pinging it, it resolves to another IP address that is not mine. I have multiple dynamic dns addresses that map to my Subsonic server and the other ones work fine so I know it is not my server or router.

Any ideas why my custom address returns "Status: username.subsonic.org responded successfully" but not to my IP address?

Thanks

Goto Settings/Network and hit save - that will update the re-direct server with your new IP address.

Sounds as if that name may already be in use?? If you put yourname.subsonic.org does it bring up a logon page to another site?

I don't believe anyone else has it since it had been working fine for the last few months...also I just tried a tracert to it and it resolves to subsonic.canaca.com, which appears to be an alias of subsonic.org. This also seems like the same address that it will resolve to if you ping any bogusnonexistentname.subsonic.org

I've even tried changing the name to other random things and they always resolve to that same subsonic.canaca.com (66.49.215.227) address...

OK, that does seem a bit strange, Let's recap so we're not missing anything.

I believe that canca is the host for Subsonic.org, so that in itself isn't a big deal.

Let's confirm a few things:

When you hit Save from the network settings it replies as successful, but not at your IP address?

Have you confirmed whether or not your external ip is the same or if it has changed?

Have you gone to canyouseeme.org to confirm that the correct port is open?

The servername.subsonic.org service is a simple redirect database. When you hit Save from the Settings/Network menu it just transmits your servername plus your external ip and port number so that when it gets a request for your server it just sends it to your exrenal ip:port# address.

What happens if you input your externalip:port# ?

These problems are usually in the router settings or the firewall.

yes as I mentioned earlier, I can browse to my IP address or another dynamic DNS name for my IP address with the correct port and I can reach my Subsonic server. The port and IP address are both confirmed at canyouseeme.org. So everything, internally and externally, seems to be working fine, including my IP address and all forms of browsers/clients to connect to my server, except my custom subsonic.org dns name.

Have you tried connecting to another know Subsonic site?

See if you can reach my site at http://xw8600.subsonic.org

Makes no sense!

The only remaining suggestion I can think of is to reboot your router and flush the dns cahes on the server and the machine you using to make the connection.

If you hit Save at Settings/Network and you get a reply but it reports the wrong ip address - how does the reply get there?

The only other thing may be a DNS virus, some of the new ones can even rewrite the dns server settings in routers; but even that doesn't seem logical.

If you want, send me a pm with a link to your logon page and I'll see what it says from my end. that should tell us something - not sure what at this point - but it can't hurt.

It works fine.

Don't add the port number when using the server.subsonic.org address.

Just enter:

http://server.subsonic.org

I sent a more detailed PM

Reminder of how the Subsonic custom domain name works:

Recall that the redirect works like this:
  • Your computer tries to contact http://MyCustomDomain.subsonic.org. It does so by looking up the ip address using the DNS system (which is always 66.49.215.227) and then contacting that IP address using the host header of "MyCustomDomain.subsonic.org"
  • The subsonic.org web server receives that connection and looks up the host header provided in its database to find out your real current ip address, your real HTTP port, and your real context path.
  • The server then sends back a message to the browser that says "The page that you are trying to retrieve is temporarily unavailable. Why don't you try this address: http://your.real.ip.address:yourHTTPPort/YourContextPath ?" This is called a "302 Redirect."
  • Your browser receives this message and attempts to contact that ip address port and context path but passes no host header information. This is your real live server at home.
  • Your server receives this connection and says "hey, I'm set up for HTTPS." It then send another message similar to the first one... "The page that you are trying to retrieve is temporarily unavailable. Why don't you try this address: https://your.real.ip.address:yourHTTPSPort/YourContextPath ?" This is also called a "302 Redirect."
  • Your browser tries to contact that ip address and port and context path (again with no host header information), but this time it uses SSL encrypted communication.

Hope this helps,

Glenn

Excellent post Glenn :D
I think it would be a good idea if you copy that and make it a sticky - I think a lot of users would benefit on knowing on what is exactly going on "under the hood"

(And the wiki if you are feeling brave  )
