Under Settings | Music Folders, I have defined three folders, A, B and C (for argument sake). Under Settings | Users, I'd like to have an option Define Random which, when selected, would display three new lines showing my Music Folders with an entry field for a numeric value like this:
- Code: Select all
Folder Value
A _10_
B __4_
C __1_
The numbers in the Value field be used for the first round of randomization to determine the library to choose from, followed by a second random generation to pick an actual track.
In this case, a random number from 1 to 15 (or 0 to 14, if you prefer

My personal desire for this is that I have a lot of educational talks that I listen to. During the week, I'd like to have those be 70-90% of what I hear, with some music thrown in for variety, but on the weekend, I'd like to change the ratio to 70-90% music with a bit of education thrown in. I also saw in another post (somewhere...) someone who wanted to listen to random selections from "his" music, while his wife got to listen to random selections from "her" music. (Can't blame him for not wanting to listen to Brittany Spears...) Allowing this 'pre-randomization' on a per-user basis would fix both issues. It would also allow those who have their music arranged by genre to customize the mix based on what they're feeling like that day - you're in a Reggae mood, but need a bit of Funk and a dose of Rap? No problem! It's been a hard afternoon and need some Metal to keep you awake, but want some Country to keep you on your toes? Done! (yeah, made myself a little sick, too, but you get the idea...)
This would, of course, work based on any Music Folder arrangement, and could be expanded at some point to list by genre, year, or any other tag if it's ever decided to implement ID3 tag organization.
Thanks so much for the great work so far, Sindre! If I ever manage to learn any Java, I might just take this on myself. (of course, it might be my motivation to learn some Java...)
